Mexico is a diverse country, holds 10% of global diversity, a fascinating fact when you consider that only has 1% of the land surface of the planet, however, we are in an environmental crisis that damaged the basic structure to the life by which policy instruments have been generated protected natural areas in differents parts to Mexico.
The instrument of environmental policy more positioning for conservation of biodiversity are protected areas. These are terrestrial or aquatic portions of the country representative of the diverse ecosystems, where the original environment has not been substantially altered and producing increasingly recognized and valued ecological benefits. They are created by presidential decree and activities that can be performed on them are established in accordance with the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection, Regulations, program management and ecological management programs. They are subject to special protection, conservation, restoration and development, according to categories established by the Act.
The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) currently manages 176 natural areas of federal character representing more than 25,394,779 hectares which were reflected as follows:
41 Biosphere reserves.
66 National Parks.
5 Natural Monuments.
8 Areas of natural resource protection.
38 Areas to protect flora and fauna.
18 Sanctuaries.
With a total of 176 protected natural areas, totaling 25,394,779 ha, equivalent to the total national territory the small amount of 4.96% (source 25 November 201303: 45: 20 PM by the Directorate of Evaluation and Monitoring CONANP)
However, only 61 protected natural areas are registered in the national system of protected areas SINAPs which represents a poor 34.6% of protected areas recorded by the CONANP.
While there are success stories of protected natural areas as a Sierra Gorda in the state of Queretaro, natural protected areas face an uncertain future in Mexico because many do not have a management plan and monitoring is very archaic, is the ideal time for appropriate to reinstate the figures of protected natural areas in a suitable social and environmental political model to the needs of each bioregion activities.
Is necessary Increase in a real way to at least 17% of terrestrial and inland water areas of the territory of the downtown area as protected areas with decrees and adequate management plans attached to the legal framework for the interconnection generating genetic exchange of wildlife, ensure genetic variability, generate biocultural corridors in the downtown area that includes areas, monuments and archaeological, historical and artistic remains with emphasis on indigenous peoples with special emphasis on natural protected areas with emphasis on biocultural row Huasteca area, Otomi Tepehua area, the transversal neo volcanic area, black sierra, and mesophyll mountain forest.
protected natural areas are a space of great importance to climate change mitigation, provide a wealth of environmental services such as carbon capture, recharging aquifers, and especially are home to thousands of wild animals that we must protected to conserve the world's biodiversity.

Thanks for highlighting biodiversity and protected areas of Mexico and the way they are managed today. Only 61 out of 176 are registered protected areas, that itself shows the pathetic state. Mexican authorities should take stock of all these protected areas , register the unregistered ones and implement law and policies to conserve and care for them as you rightly pen down their importance.
