Open Terrace Garden |
---|
Yesterday I read news in the newspaper that the Tamilnadu government gives free things like seeds, and guides in order to motivate open terrace garden. In my one of the last ambassador articles, I represented open terrace garden in my friends house. Now it is popular all over the city. All are showing interest in making home garden in their open terrace, if they own a own building. This is not allowed in a rented buildings.
Now the vegtetables and fruits available in open market is not a full of vitamins and minerals but a full of pesticides and artificial fertilizers. So we will affected by many new diseases, even we cannot find out why this caused? what is the correct medicine etc. Recently my mother is affected by severe skin rashes, even she took rest in home itself without exposing her in sunlight. The doctors did not know what is the reason for this. They simply told that now a days we consume more vegetables and fruits which are grown using fertilizers and pesticides. We thought that we intake nutrients but actually they are poison only. The best solution for this is making home garden in open terrace if they did not have place around the houses. So we can eat fresh vegetables without artificial fertilizers. It will reduce CO2 in surrounding area and reduce somewhat air pollution. One fruitfully engage in garden dosen't do excercise separately. The time to drive or walk to market is reduced. We utilize that time too for our gardening. Children in those housed are start to love nature automatically. These are not only the benefits, but also we can save money . Not only money but also our health too. |

Terrace gardeningis as old as the days of Babylon, but today it has a new meaning in India. Once I read in news that Bangalore is known as "Garden City". where every household used to have either an ornamental garden or a kitchen garden. Then it was also called the"Air-conditioned City". But it started losing both names as people started building on the entire area allotted instead of leaving space for gardens.
There are so many benifits of Terrace garden. When we grow our own vegetables on a terrace it not only gives some space back to agriculture, but it also helps the grower to get chemical-free fresh vegetables. This will notonly save money, but also time and energy spent on several trips to the vegetable market on polluted roads. Then it cools the house, it is also good exercise while tending and watering plants.
Kudos to Tamilnadu gov.
Thanks for sharing, Guru :)

Kudos to the Tamilnadu government for initiating such a green movement. It is very simple. We have planted Tulsi Plant & Aloe Vera Plant in our balcony. Tulsi leaves can be put in Tea or drinking water. It has medicinal qualities. Aloe Vera Plant is so good for skin.
Thus, Everybody can have such gardens.
Thanks for sharing this idea

Agreed Guru. Any green activity is welcome be it Terrace Garden, Kitchen Garden, sack Garden.
Eating self grown vegetables is a boon.
It accounts for controlling pollution as well.
I saw one news item where they were injecting Saccharine in watermelons in India to make it taste sweeter. Such persons are harming the man kind & must be prosecuted with strongest punishment.

There is no doubt about it...Home gardening is one of the best possible way to eliminate harmful chemicals in our day to day food...But the real problem for an urban society is the space...Thx for the article..also I really appreciate Rahul Acharya's comment on this artcile...food for thought indeed..

That's a great news, Guru :) Home gardening is one of the best options for getting safe vegetables. Also, home gardening raises awareness on green life, so it doesn't end with just growing vegetables at home. This will lead the people to further eco-friendly actions.

It is true that the nutrient containing fruits and vegetables found in market have been a threat to us as mentioned by Guru Vishnu Mathivanan. The true fact is that only 0.9% of the total pesticide and fertilizer goes to the plant and rest 99.1% to the land which ultimately to human through different sources and thus causing the residual effect. And now days many kinds of injection are used to ripen those fruits and vegetables in one night! Earning money has become more important than saving ourselves and our planet.
So its all our duty - be informed, use more local products and be eco-friendly!!

No doubt , these days vegetables and fruits sold in market use/are exposed to pesticides and chemicals which pose a big risk to our health. Terrace garden is not only an amazing way to grow and consume home grown food but also enables us to connect to nature, adds natural nook to the house ,enhances the aesthetics of the house & becomes a passive cooling element for building. Thanks for sharing , Guru.

"The urban population expansion is more pronounced in developing countries as result of the immigration from rural areas, as people flock to the cities in search of food, employment and security.. The trend is accelerating, and by the year 2030, it is expected that about 60% of the world??s population will be living in cities...Within this reality, urban and peri-urban agriculture/horticulture (UPA/UPH) has become a key component of the survival strategies of poorer sections of the population while also providing a significant contribution to the urban fresh food supply chain. UPA/UPH is also a source of employment and income, and has the potential to improve the nutrition of disadvantaged urban residents" this is the report publishe by FAO focusing on Urban/peri urban horticulture/Agriculture
As you said Guru Vishnu, we have to fouus on making home garden in terrace, sack garden and kitchen garden. Evey bit of land must be utilised as every bit of land counts. And we have to foster the Urban/PeriU Urban Horticulture/Agriculture to get fresh fruits and vegetables and to get healthyand pbivoulsy reduce air pollution cum land pollution. I would like all eco-generation to search about UPA/UPH.
