First Move towards Sustainability

by | 12-09-2014 22:35 recommendations 0

The youth are viewed as idle individuals who do nothing but rant on social media. Contrariwise, many of the young minds in the Philippines, especially here in Cebu, are very willing and thrilled to participate in efforts and movements for sustainable development. However, the lack of connections and information about these movements hinder the youth to act. Being an Eco-gen Ambassador, I know that I can somehow bridge this gap. This is the reason why I wanted to become one, in the first place. I want to connect the youth and forge them to become part of the movement for sustainable development.

Part of my plans for the first month of my assignment as an Ambassador is to gather active youth, orient them on current environmental issues and give them information about Tunza Eco-generation platform. Thus, I initiated a meeting with the students in our school and discussed how we can spread the idea of sustainability to our colleagues. We identified the points that would complement with Tunza¡¯s objectives. Together we identified our short-term and long-term plan to strengthen the number of youth who desire to contribute and become Eco-vanguards.

As stated in my previous report, paper waste is becoming a problem here in our region. Most of the solid wastes seen in offices, particularly in universities and colleges, are papers. Paper accounts for one-fourth of the volume of waste in landfills. When it breaks down in a landfill, it converts to methane, which produces twenty times more greenhouse-gas emissions than carbon dioxide. With this in mind, our team decided to initiate a project that would become a catalyst in solving this problem, and this project is Project NOWTBUKS (NOW is the Time to Build Up Kids for Sustainability).

At the end of the meeting, we unanimously agreed to do Project NOWBTUKS Activities (which I will explain more in the next reports) for the next months. Every member was given a task in order to organize the ¡°to-do list¡± and speed-up the progress of the pre-implementation activities. We also agreed to have progress reports/meeting in order to regularly track development.

Wow Mary, I commend the initiative taken by you in this ambitious project . The preparations taken by you seem to be very foresighted. In addition to discouraging paper wastage, the project will also give a new picture of the youth , as a hardworking, determined group of people. I hope that the Project NOWTBUKS (NOW is the Time to Build Up Kids for Sustainability) will become a sustained activity that will thrive and flourish.

Thank you so much Sabin! That is also my hope, to create awareness to as much young minds as I could. And I agree with you that activities can be performed better if there is collaborations with other ambassadors, I really hope I can work with other Ambassadors on my first term here in Tunza Eco-generation. For now, I will exert much effort in making Project NOWTBUKS a success.

Thanks a lot, Joseph! :D I'm very happy to hear words from a countrymate. :) NOWTBUKS is actually pronounced as "Notebook". Yes, that can be a very good suggestion to really sell the idea of sustainability to others. Thanks a lot! Hope to hear about your activities soon. :)

Mary I am sure that you will be able to bring change in your community by involving youth for great and innovative Project NOWTBUKS. Recycling paper is a great way to conserve the environment and recycle the resources.

I specially like the idea of involving the youth, who are always in the search for the platform to do something new, and you being the Ambassador you are doing great leading the team.
It would be better if the ambassadors collaborate together and carry this program to greater heights.

Congratulations for the commencement of program and best of luck for upcoming days.

Go countrymate! I really like the idea of the NOWTBUKS (sounds like Notebook) Project. I think you can also fund raise using recycle papers and make it a small notebook. In the first page, you can paste some information about Eco-Generation or about importance of recycling. This is a great start! -Joseph (Laguna, Philippines)

Great to see so many environmental activities being started all around the world by the Tunza Eco-Generation ambassadors. Very truly said Mary that unless and until the youth does not involve in such activities to preserve the environment, sustainable development cannot be achieved. You are doing a wonderful initiative to gather all the youth of the country and sort out plans for environment protection as a part of the NOWTBUKS project. Keep it up!

Congrats Mary for a great initiative. I truely agree with you that being an Eco Generation Ambassador helps in organising environment movements and empowers us to work and fight against environmental issues and encourage and inspire many more youth. I like the way you are working as team on this NOWTBUKS project. All the best for this and keep us updated.
