For last couple of weeks, the whole world was talking about a new phenomenon called "Ice Bucket Challenge" which was basically designed for charity towards the lesser known disease called Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease. I am sure many of you have already taken the challenge and also donated towards the cause also. In UAE also it was a great hype among people, but I was never been so convinced to this hype...I felt that most of the people were taking the challenge as it needs to be updated in Facebook without going into the main purpose of the event....charity and spread awareness... Anyhow, when we talk about spreading awareness, one surprising poll result has come to my notice and it is surprisingly positive in nature...In UAE, GULF NEWS is the most circulated daily newspaper and as per their readers poll, 61% people became aware on "Water wastage" rather than "ALS awareness" (only 30% have voted for that)... So, it tells me two thing: 1) Many people are still not very much aware of the importance of water - how not to waste and conserve 2) Any good cause will bring some positive impact in the society in one or the other form...
So, at the end, I will advocate for any good cause which helps the society...

Raising money for disease research is a noble goal and all people should be altruistic but not at the cost of contributing to the arrogant waste of a vital and diminishing natural resource.
Well, it's great that the ice bucket challenge has raised awareness on water as well :)
Thanks for sharing, Unmesh :)

Some people do it just for fun. Some did it for the social media or some did it for charity. Also in Thailand, it's a super hot country so...yeah. It's quite the challenge that suit our weather. Ice bucket is not that harsh in our country. I suggest on using something more tangible and usable rather that water that already washed through your body. Perhaps toys, books, or glasses. Something that you can give to the charity and not wasting a single piece. Thanks for sharing, Unmesh.

The very fact that 61% people became aware on "Water wastage" is a testimony to the fact that though the trend that was for most , a mere publicity stunt ,it served as a wake up call for many others who preferred to give their support in more substantial ways. The advantages of the Rice Bucket Challenge, for instance are abundant.Above increasing sales for rice, and providing nourishment for those who can ill afford it, you are also assured of the fact that the rice has not gone to waste .

Water bucket challenge although is not popular in our country but have known for it quiet a long time as it has gain popularity all over the globe. Specially this is aimed at the celebrities in order to spread the awareness for mass population ,and even presidents are after it.
What I opine is that, this initiation should only be limited to the high profile people, who can influence to the wider audience through their act, and nit just everyone should be involved in it. And the organizers should carry in the region where there is sufficient water only and organizers should come up with other creative ideas to raise awareness.
So in UAE some other ways to spread awareness should be done and as Umesh stated, I am sure that people of UAE will be aware through other ways too.

I know the importance of saving water so wasting water for creating awareness for a less known disease is vague idea according to me. but yes many people around the world would think the other way round specially those who have easy access to safe water. However, it cannot be maintained that this kind of initiative could not make people aware of ALS. It did indeed! i was the one who went to the ALS wikipedia page when first came to know about the ALS ice bucket challenge. so yes it created awareness but at the expense of wasting water. I still strongly believe "Save water, save life"

Thx a lot Rohan, Raunak & Arushi for your comments...

@Christy : I believe Arushi already had replied to your query...But it is really a surprising thing to me...Normally I consider UAE is one of the top ranking nations when we talk about environmental initiatives by Govt & other agencies and after so much of campaign, spreading awareness also, ppl need ALS challenge to be aware of water wastage in UAE!!!! thats really surprising...it only indicates that much of works are still to be done...

@Christy : While this challenge was gaining momentum , there were mixed reactions to it. While some happily took on the challenge, others criticised it and said that it is wrong to raise awareness at the cost of wasting water. Critics came forward with facts and figures like 85% of the world population lives in the driest half of the planet. , 1.1 billion people live without clean drinking water—etc. One shocking news was that one Scottish town was out of water due to the ALS bucket challenge . When talks started about water wastage , other people who had not yet taken the challenge started thinking of better ways to take up this challenge without wasting water like some people used beach water or took the challenge in the beach so that water gets recycled. Some people took the challenge near tree so as to water the tree as well. One thin built man stood on the car and took the challenge as his car was anyways due for car wash . This way people started thinking and talking about ways to avoid water wastage. That??s how this challenge raised public awareness on the importance of saving water, more than the actual disease.

Wow, it's surprising that the ice bucket challenge has raised awareness on water, twice than ALS itself. Is there any one who can let me know how it happened?
Posted 15-09-2014 13:52
You have raised a valid point. The awareness is sometimes raised in a different way & actual initiative gets diluted somewhere. The same has happened here.
Good causes must be encouraged. Its' good that huge donations were collected to combat ALS.

I agree with you , Unmesh. Even I wondered the way most of the people were taking this challenge just to go with the trend and to update their FB status as you rightly indicated , demeaning the objective or significance of this challenge. But it was worth this hype as ultimately 91% people's awareness level was raised either on ALS or water wastage .
It's good that at least some positive message was spread . Thanks for sharing an interesting outcome of this challenge.

Yes Unmesh I also agree that it raised awareness about Water wastage. People were talking less about ALS. There were various idea floating like Rice Bucket Challenge.
The real cause got diluted somewhere.
