On the night of 17-Sep-14 we visited a reputed international Pizza Restaurant (Pizza Hut) for dinner. As the servings were generous we requested the leftover to be packed (to avoid food wastage). Packing the leftover food while eating out is a normal practice for us. Normally it is a cardboard box & a carry bag. But this time we got a pleasant surprise. The leftover pizza was packed in a special card board box (no carry bag) that prominently stated that Top of the green Box Easily converts to 4 Single-Slice Serving Plates. It was true & practical as well. As you open the lid, the top portion was perforated in to 4 squares that can be easily removed. It implies that while anybody opts for take away, the can easily eat in the car or at home without further taking any more disposable plastic plate, or other stuff that is harmful to the environment. These green plates & reminder of the box can be easily disposed in paper disposal bins meant for recycling. As a responsible Tunza Eco-Generation regional Ambassador I noticed further the Take away Box. On the top Left corner it was prominently marked The New & Amazing Green Box. And on the Right corner Bottom the marking stated 4 Serving Plates. As you open the lid of the Green Box the side strip was printed with the instruction that Top of the green Box Easily converts to 4 Single-Slice Serving Plates. They had designed the take away box in an innovative manner so that kids will feel excited to use the serving plates & the whole practice is environmental friendly. There was no plastic bag as well. I approached the Restaurant Manager named Jenene – a guest expert at Pizza hut & introduced myself as Tunza Eco-Generation regional Ambassador to the Middle East. Further I congratulated them on this new green initiative. I expressed my happiness & willingness to use this box as 4 serving plates & pledged my support for their initiative. I also said that I?ll spread this message around so that many others can take advantage with this new initiative. She was very happy & stated that I was the first one to approach & appreciate this new creativity at that particular store. I wish to highlight a fact that many good initiatives lose their edge by non-cooperation from the members of public. Everybody says that initiative is good but nobody implements the same. Therefore, we must co-operate with new green initiatives & change our habits in line with the conservation & preservation of nature & our fragile environment. Step by step if we move & adopt green practices in our daily lifestyle the world will be a greener place to live & we will hand over a sustainable environment to our next Gen. Thanks for reading & kindly look for similar practices in your respective countries. |

These best practices illustrate that Pizza hut and its suppliers are committed to continuously improving the sustainability performance and Good food only comes from good places, sustainable practices and the belief that nourishment and taste are only two aspects of food.
Thanks for sharing with us, Rohan :)

This is excellent idea Mary. Collecting these card board boxes for recycling is welcome.
We have segregated recycling bins placed right opposite to our building.
I segregate the waste & do down to dispose the recyclables separately. I feel very satisfied & proud.

Yes Christy I fully agree with you. This must be made as a sort of norm for all such restaurants. I used to feel suffocated when the eateries pack a load of disposable stuff like Plates, spoons, tissues etc. in a big plastic bag.
This is a welcome move indeed.

Thanks for sharing this, Rohan! Pizza hut has done a very good job of letting their customers participate in the green movement. :) We also have a pizza restaurant chain here in our region that plans to collect all the used pizza box and give incentives to the customers who do so. They will turnover the boxes to an organization who can recycle the boxes so that less waste is put in the landfill.

That is a commendable step taken by Pizza Hut.
The memners of the public often tend to agitate for more awareness and information ,but when the same is provided, few are willing to cooperate in the process of its implementation.
The clearly marked message given by Pizza Hut ,is sure to have a ripple effect on its may customers.
Thanks Rohan , for informing us about this.

@Arushi, Wow, thanks for the great input!
@Rohan, Thank you for the vivid report on creative & innovative packing practice of the restaurant. Just taking leftover is enough to get complimented but thinking about eco-friendly package is one huge step further! It should be a new norm for every restaurant so that we can reduce food waste & use of disposable plastic bags at the same time.

Thanks for sharing your experience , Rohan. Glad to note that more and more big brands are adopting green practices and setting example for others.
Another pizza restaurant chain ¡°Pizza Fusion¡± is setting very good example by being sustainable in every aspect of it's operations. It specializes in oval-shaped gourmet pizzas, salads, sandwiches and beverages made from natural ingredients — along with gluten-free, vegan and lactose-free menu items. Green construction materials and techniques used by the restaurant include a website powered by renewable energy, 100 percent post-consumer paper products, countertops remanufactured from plastic detergent bottles, wall insulation remanufactured from recycled blue jeans, non-VOC paint (volatile organic compounds), floor finishes with low VOC concrete sealant or renewable resources such as bamboo or cork, tiles from recycled glass bottles, low-flow toilets and sinks, Forest Steward Council wood, energy efficient—compact fluorescent lighting, super-efficient air conditioning and a heat exchange system that recaptures heat from the pizza ovens for the domestic hot water needs. Further , it offsets 100% of the power consumption in its locations by using purchasing carbon credits and using environmentally sustainable building practices. The restaurant delivery drivers use hybrid electric vehicles. Amazing!
