UN CLIMATE SUMMIT IN NEW YORK: FOOD CONSUMPTION A MUST ADDRESS SUBJECT.

IPCC_Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Fifth IPPC Report indicates-Without more mitigation, global mean surface temperature might increase by 3.7?to 4.8?over the 21st century.

As the world's Leaders are preparing to hold talks on climate change next week, so too has researchers continued to dig into what is it in human behaviors that contributes the close to 90%  to Global warming.

On the 1st of September UK based researchers in London Highlighted eating less meat or heavy diets is a vital part of tackling climate change.

Their study says that on present trends food production on its own will reach - and perhaps exceed - the global targets for total greenhouse gas emissions in 2050. The scientists have a strong hold that eating less complex food like steak can enable us reduce deforestation, power consumption and above all industrial expansion.

Bojana Bajzelj is one of the researchers from the University of Cambridge?s department of engineering, who wrote the study with colleagues from Cambridge's departments of geography and plant sciences and the University of Aberdeen's Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences.

He underlines: the lesser we eat heavy western diets- Cheese and dairy, the lesser the usage of the land, deforestation and GHG emissions. They indicated that if drastic action is not taken, the cropland will expand by 42% by 2050 and fertilizer use by 45%. A further tenth of the world?s pristine tropical forests would disappear by mid-century.

This had earlier been emphasized by WWF?s Director General, Jim Leape in two of WWF?s leaving planet reports in 2012, Annual Review. He said, ?We are using 50% more resources than the earth can provide?? The leading conservation organization warns us that it takes 1.5 years for the earth to reconstitute all what we squander in a year.

Science will also remember that in the same documents WWF produced in 2012, the president of WWF International, Yolande Kakabadse, pointed out to people 43% of all canned food unbelievably goes to waste unopened. This is not the first time scientists and science organizations are sounding a heavy warning into the ears of people.

Now let's see what will happen in New York after all these warnings for change.

Although food losses and waste occur at all stages of the food supply chain, the causes and their impact around the world differ. In developing countries, food losses affect small farmers the hardest. Almost 65% of food losses happen at the production, post-harvest, andprocessing stage. In industrialized countries, food waste often occurs at the retail and consumer level due to a ¡°throw-away¡± mindset.

I read that summit was a great success. At least the world leaders agreed environmental impact. China also promised to reduce the emission levels. This is a good stepping stone I believe.

Which is why we all ought to be part of the struggle against global change campaigns- we all take part one way or the other. Whether you are a reputable rich man or a mere individual like me we all contribute to the change.

Though turning vegetarian is a great step forward,we do have to take into account the many parts of the world where this may not be entirely possible. eg remote mountainous regions where little vegetation grows

What needs to be advocated is a more responsible and moderated way of consuming foodstuffs

A suggestion made by Al Gore in the documentary . An Inconvenient Truth , suggests staring to eat vegetarian on Mondays as a starting step.
    We can then move forward.

@Rohan, Thanks for great input :) I totally agree with you. Eating takes huge part of our joy and wellness. What if we practice 'Mindful eating' and 'Responsible eating' instead of so much traveled & processed food? I think our health will greatly get improved and we can mitigate pollution derived by food production.

Udeh, I have three comments to your excellent report:
    1. Food items going to waste unopened, cooked food wastage, expiry of food items without consumption are unacceptable in view of growing food scarcity in the world & when so many people sleep hungry.
    2. Go vegetarian. Less intake of meat will encourage afforestation & decrease deforestation. It is a proven theory.
    3. Encourage local growth of food so that transportation & freezing of food. Thus saving precious energy.
Thanks for reporting & awaiting New York summit on 23-Sep-14

Dietary habit has lots to do in this regard and directly linked with Climate change issues...Water conservation, availability of food grans etc are also linked with this...lets see what the convention tells us...but it is sure that you, me, we have to do a lot altogether...thx for the report

Thanks , Israel , for highlighting an important issue which many a times Climate Ambassadors fail to address. Food consumption impacts the GHG emissions in a big way. Understanding the resources that go into producing our meals can make us more aware of the relationship between food and climate change, and help us make better choices.
There are several factors that contribute to food's climate impact, including: how low on the food chain it is, how much energy is used to produce it (and whether the food is grown organically or with chemical inputs), and how far it has to travel before it gets to the table(i.e.food miles).

    Hi Udeh,
Thanks for commenting. It is a real issue to be addressed by all of us.

This indeed calls for serious concern and urgent measures to help save the situation.
Like you said, let's see what will happen in New York in a few days.
    Thanks for reporting.
