Global campaign for environment protection-need to raise the intensity

by Arushi Madan | 18-09-2014 15:17 recommendations 0

Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio has been appointed UN climate ambassador. He has been named a messenger of peace by the UN, with a special focus on climate change.

UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon presented DiCaprio with the role one week ahead of a landmark climate summit in New York, where the actor is invited to address the heads of state and government in attendance, including Barack Obama and David Cameron. Actor will speak at Ban Ki-moon climate summit, where leaders gather next week to curb greenhouse gas emissions .

Many of us (especially his fans) may  know  that in addition to his reputation as a guy who loves dating models, DiCaprio is known as an environmentalist and activist. Earlier this year, the actor took part in an oceans summit, hosted by US Secretary of State John Kerry, and pledged $7 million to ocean conservation. In 1998, DiCaprio established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which campaigns and awards grants to environmental projects. The "Titanic" star's namesake foundation, dedicated to the preservation of the Earth's wild places, has given grants to groups working to save tigers and sharks preserve rainforests, Antarctica and the oceans and provide clean water to hundreds of thousands of people in Africa. Leonardo DiCaprio donated $3 million to benefit wild tigers.

So undoubtedly he is the most apt choice to be the face of the United Nations' effort to raise awareness of its climate change efforts. He strongly feels that . "How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet."

DiCaprio will join 11 other UN messengers of peace , including George Clooney , Paulo Coelho and Yo-Yo Ma. Messengers are picked from the fields of art , film , literature , music and sport , and  are charged with raising awareness of the ideals and missions of the UN.

I was wondering how effective it would be if we have many more  such messengers , limited not only to UN Summits etc but beyond that .

How if celebrities like Bollywood actors , prominent artists , sportspersons etc  advocate "Sustainability , green living & environment protection" in their commercials /advertisements. They endorse so many commercial products , why not they saying a line about "Let's protect environment " or "Let's save paper" or " lets plant trees" or "Let's reduce use of plastic" etc.  They could also say a line (on environment protection)  on key moments /celebrations/concerts like Grammy awards , Bollywood filmfare award ceremonies , Music nights  or any occasion where mass public has gathered. Don't you think many youngsters , children today follow them a lot and environment advocacy from their mouth would make a better impact. This could be one way of spreading awareness to wider mass about "need to protect environment". Currently newspapers and magazines are talking about this but TV or radio media still lack this advocacy(or not enough). It's time that we raise the level , mode and intensity of global campaign for environment protection.

After all every effort counts , every word spreads awareness.

I truly agree with you that many youngsters , children today follow celebrities a lot and environment advocacy from their mouth would make a better impact. It is always a wonderful feeling when you find out that the celebrity whose work you enjoy is involved in a good cause. Thanks for sharing, Arushi :)

Involving the celebrities will raise the level of participation by the public. It acts as a motivation. The bottom line is that message must reach the masses & there must be an implementation of the theory part.

You're right Arushi, celebrities, especially actors , have a considerable amount of influence on the people around them ,especially their fan following .

If they choose to use this influence in a wise manner, ,especially by taking up the cause of the environment , then their fans and many others are bound to do so as well.

It is a much better influence on the minds of the public, specifically the youngsters ,if their role models support these causes and in doing so , behave in a more responsible way.
If more celebrities, follow suit ,then there is bound to be a sizable minimization of negative influences .

I agree with your idea, Arushi :) Hmm, looking back at my school years, youths crazily follows what their 'Idol' says. Celebrities words were more powerful than mama's recommendations, right? Finding environmentally aware local celebs and raising awareness on the environment among celebs can be another key to powerful spread green messages to mass people.

Agreed Arushi we must raise the level , mode and intensity of global campaign for environment protection. Celebrities play an important role in raising such awareness. If children follows them, they convince parents too to join in the efforts. This will change the level of penetration in the society & the world shall be a greener place to live.
    Thanks for the post.

It is really great to know that Di Caprio, star of all the time, has been the "Goodwill Ambassadors". Next week superstars and the ambassadors are going to have a conference on green house gas emission and I hope that the voice of these role models will inspire the whole population to do something for the environment.
The idea of appointing imbassadorsis very good. Even the branch of WWF in Nepal appoints celebrities like Miss Nepal as goodwill ambassadors. It helps them to reach the voice to wider audiences.
And Thank you Udeh for stating about Yaya, it is happy to see the footballer, indeed one of the best midfield in the world , taking such initiation to protect the African Elephant.
Lastly, Arushi thank you for sharing the news with the green minds.

    Thanks for sharing Arushi!
Truly, more of such will go a long way in helping our environment advocacy campaigns as these stars have huge followers these days who want to follow their ideals to the last.
UNEP has such project with their "Goodwill Ambassadors" which include Gisele
    Bündchen(super model), Don Cheadle(actor), Ian Somerhalder(actor)
    and Yaya Touré(footballer).
Yaya Toure, who is from Ivory coast and plays for Manchester City F.C(one of the best clubs in England and Europe) is now engage in a campaign against elephant poaching which has been a major challenge in Africa.
Yay a Toure is also the African Footballer of the year 2013 and hence has many followers and great global respect such that his participation in this cause, like other goodwill ambassadors, will yield great results.
I am so happy for DiCaprio's appointment, he's the perfect fit for the task.
    Thanks Arushi for the report.
