One summer evening I read an article about the impact on environment from E-Waste. I was shocked when i read that chemical substance from ONE computer is enough to pollute BILLIONS of leters of water.
Something had to be done..
Without complaining around, I decided to make a change by myself.
With some fellow volunteers, I planned a pilot project. The concept was to collect old computers from homes/offices, repair them and donate them to underprivileged children.
In this way, the impact goes in 2 ways.
1. It reduces electronic waste.
2. It improves the IT literacy level of underprivileged children.
So the plan is to partner up with an organisation who can repair and refurbish our computers. And then, contact NGOs who are helping underprivileged children and donate the computers to them.
What do you guys think of this project concept? Is there anything to change so that I will be more successful ? Please post comments below.
I am planning to implement this by the end of next month.

This is an Eco time bomb Januka, the pic is awesome!
It is high time for Sir Lanka Govt to introduce e-waste recycling.
As Rahul has mentioned these items can be exchanged or donated (esp the obsolete ones as they may be in working condition)
Options exists, action awaits..

You took up a great initiative , proud of you , keep it up! As Rahul mentioned , there may be few dealers in your area who may be exchanging old/used electronic items for new ones at discounted price. Or if there are recycling centres in your place , they may be taking these.
You may raise it with your city municipality to place e waste collection bins for responsible management and collection of the electronic waste.

Sometimes, when we invent too much of the new innovations, the old ones become dangerous wastes. It think technology may be convenience and good, But, if we use it too much, we can destroy our world. Electronic waste can be reused, recycles, or use their parts in industries. It can be transformed into useful things rather than a pile of broken metal.
All the best:)

A significant percentage of these are dumped because either they are obsolete or they are"un-fashionable" to be seen aroundwith! Yes ... many people change electronic equipment just to be current!
I agree with you that a substantial portion of this e-waste can be recycled, re-conditioned and put to use in places where funding is hard to come by: like govt schools, like orphanages and so on.
All the very best :)

We all are accumulating more e-waste than we are able to handle, and it??s time to make a conscious effort to get it under control.

This is a really brilliant idea! E-waste can provide rare-earth elements when it recycled. Also donating out of dated electronic devices can be a good solution to solve the digital inequality. Thumbs up for your great move forward to sustainable community :)

With the presence and ubiquitous availability of such electronic goods more and more problem of disposal is likely to occur if correct attempts are not taken quickly.
Januka you have come forward with very nice proposal. Reusing of the electronic goods must be done.
You can contact with some company or dealers who can launch the exchange offers like selling old devices and getting new one. I recently sold some of my electronic goods in exchange to get new one. Or like you have pointed, there must be some NGOs working for management of e-waste.
Best wishes
