My First Litter Picking Campaign |
---|
My first litter picking campaign Litter is an environmental issue that is still a concern in our communities in Botswana. Not only that the litter pollutes the environment, it also raises health issues too. However The Environmental Conservation Society (ECS) which is basically a group of youth at the Botswana College of Agriculture who are passionate about the environmental conservation and wildlife protection and whom I work with closely in the committee decided to keep our community of Sebele clean. This was proposed to be done in a form of a clean-up campaign. On the 6th of September 2014 at 0800hrs we gathered around as the clubs members as we were initiating our clean-up campaign. We geared up in our ECS T-shirts, disposable bags and protective gloves. We started picking up litter from the eastern side of our school. Moving along into the residential areas of Sebele, we attracted the settler?s attention. A number of kids and teens decided to join in the campaign. This also gave us an opportunity to interact with the settlers and enlighten them with the current environmental issues and how their small contributions to environmental conservation are very significant to the big picture of conservation. We also had some few members of other clubs come to help us undertake the campaign. This helped us get along with fellow youth conversationalists and made our campaign very powerful.I am looking forward to our second cleanup campaign, which would hopefully involve more conversationalists to help us spread the importance of conservation. |

Good Job Tefo. Disposal & recycling of the waste so collected is an important finish to this beginning.
Keep it up. This will definitely motivate others to follow suit. The best part is to recycle at the household & Industry level itself.

Litter picking campaigns or Clean up events help in cleaning the place , providing opportunity to work as one-mission team and convey strong message to keep litter free environment .
We must realise that if we dispose of our litter correctly, recycle and reuse wherever possible, there won't be any need for spending time and other resources for such Clean up events.

Tefo, you guys made a real great work! I've seen many good cases on clean up campaigns from many E-gen Ambassadors. In most cases, it takes quite time to promote the clean up campaigns among settlers. But once the settlers get aware of the waste management problem, it creates huge repercussion and brings more volunteers. Of course in Korea, the same thing happened. So, you can be the one who brings the positive change in your community. I wish all the best for you and your team :)

Similar to what you said we recently conducted NAtion wide cleaning campaign and we conducted cleaning campaign on our city as well. There was wide participation of general people, women organisation and police and armies as wll. Our programm was more focused in increasing youth volunteers We picked up wastes, leared weeds and grasses and as a whole cleaned up our city.
As per our concen , we are about to launch SEW: Sustainable and Ethical Waste Management Project in our university to orient our university towards propeer management of wastes and us(youth) act as initaion for positive attitude towatds environment.

This is a great initiative, what did you do with the litter you collected? Did you divide them and dispose/recycle properly?
