When the Smog Embraces Us

South Sumatera, Jambi and Riau are the provinces located in Sumatera Island which have many peat swamp forests. This can be an advantage to each province because peat swamp forests are easy to be converted as agricultural fields, industrial forests or areas for settlement. Those reasons trigger people to clear the object. The fastest way is burning and it will be effective if it's done in dry season.

Many things happen behind the legal incineration and the illegal incineration. People usually do for their personal business. Some companies sponsor local citizen to do it because they will use the clear land for industry.  It's good for economy but there is must be one thing to be considered. It is the smog.

The smog has embraces people in these three provinces and it has merge to be a part of their lives every year. Even the smog almost covers the other provinces and the other area too. It has been a big issue for almost 5 years. The mass media have made it as their headline news. The government has sent official apology to other areas for the incident. They did some actions to extinguish the fire. But this year, they are starting to forget the issue and they try to accept it as the usual thing happened in a year.

I still remember 8 years ago, when I went to my school earlier, I could see floating ashes in the air. They looked like snow. Beautiful but dangerous. Then I still feel the same now and I don't know when my body stops to tolerate toxic material in the air.

Living in this condition isn't easy. You might be limp, difficult to breathe, teary eyes and maybe you would get other diseases related to respiratory system.

The campaign must be one of the alternative solvers. But the mindset which has existed since a long time isn't easy to be changed. The only hope is the youth who will be the future leader can take the lesson and take a role as agent of change. When the right time comes, the smog will only be a memory.

Smog is a big issue Rin. I think apology by the govt. is not enough. They should attack the root cause. If it is due to burning of forests (as you have mentioned), then govt. must stop this harmful activity. The co-operation of public is actively required in order to make this successful.
You have done a fair part by sharing this article as awareness has been spread, thanks for the post.

    Nadia, thanks for this report.
The smog is really a big issue and a very dangerous one at that.
You summed it up well when you wrote "Living in this condition isn't easy. You might be limp, difficult to breathe, teary eyes and maybe you would get other diseases related to respiratory system".
The government has a big role to play here to save lives and the environment

@Arushi Madan, Yes it is a big concern for last few years. Our neighbor countries get the effect too. Yes, the government has conducted artificial rain, but it isn't enough why? because it doesn't educate society for not burning in the next year. Thanks for the concern. :)

@Alina Ale, I hope so, All the best Alina :)

Smog in the areas you mentioned is a big concern for last few years. It causes respiratory problems , disrupts the daily lives(schools , flights , offices etc) . Local govt should take it on top priority to deal with forest fires. I heard that they are thinking of conducting artificial rain to get rid of forest fires & smog. Thanks for highlighting this issue.
