Today Kenyans united with thousands of people in over 120 cities across the world in raising awareness about the need to stop illegal trade in ivory wildlife products such as elephant tusks and rhino horns. Organized by WildlifeDirect,National Museums of Kenya among others the 10 km Global March for Elephants and Rhino was set to be the largest demonstration ever with an aim of publicizing and asking every government around the world to publicly destroy their stockpiles of illegal wildlife products and show zero tolerance for illegal trading.
According to the David Wildlife Trust a conservation charity based in Kenya, 36,000 African elephants were slaughtered last year to fuel the illicit ivory trade .It is estimated that one elephant is killed every 15 minutes.
In June this year Satao , the largest elephant that ever lived was killed to supply the demand for Ivory. The poachers used poisoned arrows before they cut off his tusks, leaving his face so mutilated that it took Kenyan authorities two weeks to confirm his identity. Its sad to note that the growth of ivory trade has been fuelled mainly by the demand from the Asian market.
While much is being done on the ground including excellent and firm wildlife conservation bills in Kenya and other African countries to protect this precious animals there is need to raise awareness across the world to purchasers of ivory products who might not realize the wider implications of the decision they make.
Ivory belong to Elephants! Don?t buy Ivory during holidays as gifts etc .Every country across the world must join up in this fight to ban selling and buying of all forms of ivory .To me there is no legal ivory! Buying ivory only serves to fuel a trade which results in more senseless deaths of these beautiful animals. We can't let man-made extinction be the end of this iconic species."

That is true Mr Samuel, and I really wish people can start seeing that business ideas are not always a pleasure and treasure which they can try on every jungle beauty. Its meant to adorn the earth instead,(Just see and don't touch). We are talking about Kings of the jungle and they should rule there as complete as possible with their crowns on their head and their distinct skins. Well done there!!!

Well reported Samuel. It is horrifying to note that majestic animals like Elephants & Rhinos are mercilessly poached.
I agree that it is our collective responsibility to reject all animal products.
In fact we are a family of vegetarians & we go a step further. We are against animal killing for human consumption as well.
Anyway, no doubt the event was well attended & well conducted.

Thanks for this interesting article Samuel! Indeed the number of Elephants had greatly decreased while Rhinos are on the verge of extinction! Let's share this message across the world, so that we will never miss these special species!

Great event. I am so jealous right now. I wish my country, Zimbabwe, also had an event of that magnitude. We also face a similar problem of poauching but there is little done about it.
Good work Samuel

Thank you for the vivid article, Samuel. I am really proud of you. I think becoming DOer like you is the most important and difficult work. It requires a big courage and you just went out and did it. Thumbs up!! You know, elephant is really intelligent animal which remembers its loved people even decades later. We can't exploit them in this way.

Glad to know that Nairobi joined this global march to protect Elephants and Rhinos. Great that you too joined it . Dubai also joined this march(I have posted a report on it on this forum ). I am personally very much against this killing of rhinos or elephants or any animals to satisfy our materialistic pleasures or fashion(jewellery etc). These are the body parts of these animals and only they have right to them -as you rightly mentioned , Samuel. What if someone kills us to use our body part for jewellery. Thanks for sharing , Samuel.
