Water water everywhere but still we are thirsty

by | 29-10-2014 00:25 recommendations 0

Nepal is the second richest country in water resources, still we Nepalese people are thirsty due to lack of availability of safe drinking water . We are not only thirsty but also  everyday are compelled to pass the time in darkness due to the problem of load shading. Nepal has got abundant water sources ranging from the big lake, river to various small ponds with continuous water flow in the various parts of the country. As Nepal population grows, demands on existing water increase, forest area is gradually replaced by the human settlement, these demands coupled with the more frequent incidence and risk of pollution and other factor that limit the availability of the potable water, increase the potential for future water conflict.

We might have different cases here in Nepal despite of limited water availability for drinking purpose, problem of loadshading, People in the city areas are compelled to drink the polluted water without any water treatment. Due to limited availability of water, we can see lots of people making the row of lines waiting for the drinking water for the domestic purpose. The case is not prevalent only in urban areas, but also in rural areas due to low management and water supply system. In this regard only 66% of the total population have access to safe drinking water,41% of land has year round irrigation, less than 400MW of hydroelectricity is available. . Nepal is the agricultural country where above 80% of the people depend on the agriculture for their subsistence livelihood. Nepal has got 83000 MW of electricity potentiality, how pathetic is to say we are bearing about 6-7 hours load shading  everyday.

The country rugged topography, young geology and  monsoon climate, every year Nepal is witnessing various  environmental destruction related to water resources like flashflood, GOLF, various avalanches etc. These environmental destruction has led to large no of human loss and increased death toll in the recent few years.

Taking about the drinking water supply in the major cities of Nepal like pokhara, Kathmandu etc .it has got twice in a week with no sufficient amount of water. People in these cities buy water for their basic purpose like drinking, washing etc. People who are well off can only bear these high cost of water ,besides other are thirsty. If the water crisis goes on this rate with in increasing population, unobjectionaly the world will face the severe crisis of water and water conflict.

Looking at this long queue of vessels waiting for water tells the sad story of potable water scarcity in Nepal.
    Well reported, Bhawana.
It is our collective responsibility not to waste water & conserve every drop.
I believe digging of wells, river canals, rain water harvesting etc. will solve this problem.

Thank you Bhawana for sharing article. We do good source of water in Nepal which can be used for various purposes. Unfortunately we are having problem of distributing them. Water scarcity in cities like Pokhara, Kathmandu is due to rapid urbanization and over population. Here in Chitwan, we do have good supply of water. However, condition may not remain same if urbanization and population continues to grow at the same rate.

Unfortunately the abundance in water supply is not enough to bring safe drinking water to
people. Nepal is not an exception.
Infrastructure and public works are absolutely necessary. The people of Nepal have to fight to make the government to prioritize these works.
    Thank you for sharing.

Its really a pathetic state of water supply in Nepal. Authorities should implement rain harvesting system or treaties with neighbpuring countries or water treatment plants to ensure good quality and quantity of water to all citizens. Safe drinking water is the bare minimum necessity for survival. Thanks for sharing, Bhawana.
