?I love you more than food, that?s a lot? is a well-said and funny quote. It?s true that we all love food. We eat three meals per day but some of us buy lots of food at one time then store it in the cupboard for long time. Some foods in the cupboard have never been touched when they were thrown away because they?re out of date. It?s a very waste of money and food. In 2012 food waste reach the rate of 36 million tons. (http://www.epa.gov/wastes/conserve/foodwaste/) Food cannot be recycled like plastic or paper because they will rot. So, in 2012, 36 million tons of food was left to rot. The places that dump lots of food are school and supermarket. Supermarket have their own way to get rid of food waste. Some articles say they have been doing very good job in minimizing the food waste by selling out the decreased price products before they?re out of date. However, in school, there?s no way to sell out the food they?ve already bought. Also, some students left food on their plates and the school need to dump it away to be burned. In this article, I will be writing about how my own school and my sister?s school get rid of the food waste. I think these solutions are thoughtful and benefit more than just getting rid of food.
The first solution for food waste is from my sister?s school. My sister?s school is quite a big school near Siam Paragon. The students studying there are a lot and no doubt the school has to deal with the problem of food waste. My sister told me that when she walk into the canteen, the food have already been put in plates for the students to carry to their table. So, they can?t tell the chef how much they want to eat and usually the school wants students to eat a lot so they give students lots of food. This cause of food waste can?t be solved easily because the school is big and the management is in the big scale. To ask every single kid how much food they want is not possible for my sister?s school because sometimes kids can be indecisive and the process of distributing food will be slowed. However, since the wastes are so much, the school sells the food waste to the farmers to feed their pigs with. Pigs eat almost everything and the food left from students can be sold cheaper than the actual pig food. I think it?s a very good idea because the school will get money to set up activities and more budget for development for selling the wasted food. Also, the farmers will get their pigs food with lower cost. However, my school don?t have much waste because it is small and students can pick how much food do they want by the serve-yourself way of management which is possible in small scale of people. So, we feed it to the street dogs and cats nearby. It may not create budgets for school but I think it?s thoughtful and kind toward the deserted animals.
The second solution is from my sister and her friends, they gather food that they can?t finish up and give it to our dog, Moo-ping (her name means ?grilled pork? in Thai). The plates in the canteen always provide them too much food than they can eat, they said. (The reason why is in the second paragraph) So she and her friends think it?s a good idea to decrease the payment of dog?s food by giving left food from her lunch to the dog when she gets home. I think it?s good for the payment within family because frankly, the dog food cost sometimes went higher than my own snack costs. This solution is good for Moo-Ping, too. Eating only hard little capsules of meat everyday can make dogs sick and lack nutrients. So, they will get to eat more variety food and get more nutrients.
In conclusion, I think that it?s the best if we finish the food on our own and not leaving food on our plate. Even in the big school, if students don?t leave food on their plate, there won?t be so much food waste left to dump away. The best way to solve this problem from the cause is to educate the students to value food. Comment down below to let me know how you, your family or your school gets rid of food waste! Let?s share our method together!

The measures your sister's school has taken seems good but i hope they will come up with more rigid ways to manage the food wastes. At my place we give the leftover to the cattles or compost them. Thanks for sharing Swasamon. :)

Well reported Swasamon. You have raised an important issue. how we tackle in UAE is as follows:
1. Our School DPS Sharjah is huge (10,000 students). They use Bokashi Composting for food waste. This is insect & smell free composting system. I've written an ambassador report on 12-Jun-13 in this regard. You may refer to the same.

2. Personally, I make sure to take what I & eat what I take.
3. Your sister's school has used a practical way of disposal of waste food. I think this is acceptable.
4. One way of reducing the waste, in my opinion, is to give a smaller portion of food to students in the first place. They may take a second helping later.
We all must reduce rather eliminate the food wastage by raising awareness & sharing ideas.

In our hometown, we make compost manure out of it in our kitchen garden behind, in this way food waste will be managed and Vegetable will get manure.
But still due to no proper management of food waste, our environment is getting more stinky, emerging issue to be thought of, thanks for sharing!!

We had cattle before. We feed them with the organic waste such as the leftover foods or the parts of vegetable that are not needed to be cooked.
At that time, the amount of bio trashes in our home is mines. the method is similar to yours
Thanks a lot for reporting. :)
