River Erosion : Bangladesh perspective

by | 01-11-2014 02:07 recommendations 0

Bangladesh has a large population. It is one of most densely populated country. Land for living is so important here. But Bangladesh has been facing river erosion for a long time. There are many people live near the bank of rivers. River erosion is the curse for those people. There are many families that lost everything due to river erosion. Today I am going to write about it. There are such stories available- ?today you are a land lord and the next month you have nothing.

Some reason for river erosion according to the researchers are as follows,
 1. Sudden rise and decrease of water level in the river
2. High difference between the highest and lowest water level in a year
3. Low quality of soil in river bank

In Bangladesh there are other reasons as well. Flooding is one of the main reasons. Every year about 143000 square kilometers is flooded. Forceful current causes the breakdown of the river bank. Currently river erosion in the most active natural calamity in Bangladesh. A large number of people are losing their land due to the cause.  Therefore a big percentage of the village people are becoming landless every year. The main rivers that are affected by erosion are

1. Jamuna
2. Brahmaputra
3. Padma
4. Meghna
5. Ariyal Kha
6. Dakatia
7. Voirob
8. Tista
9. Korotoya
10. Surma
11. Gomoti
12. Dhunot
13. Banot etc

Among 485 sub-district in Bangladesh, 407 are affected by river erosion. 54 towns are severely affected which has the price value of 3270 million Taka. Every year nearly .1 million people becomes homeless.   This statistic shows how critical the condition is. We can guess the ecosystem is also harmed.

In the photo, above the red marked area directly went under water within a moment some days ago when the place was visted.

This is actually a big issue in the Philippines. The cause of erosion that lead to landslide is the illegal cutting of trees. There should be a program of planting in order for the soil to be stable. thanks for the report!

    There will be several effects
Not to mention the migration towards the cities in search of work and shelter. However, it is difficult to find work, and many turn to crime..

Land erosion near to river banks is a grave matter of concern.
Particularly, for people living near river banks.
I feel so sad for them. Where they will go ? What they will do for a living?
In case of a flash flood the desperation is understandable. Ready Crops sometimes get washed with surging water.
    I share your concern Galib.

this problem also become my home country problem.. riverside soil degradation makes the water quality decrease significantly.. many organisms could not live at that water.. planting riparian vegetation is one of the alternative solution to protect river erosion..
