Youths for SIDS Development |
---|
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are the countries at the coastal region surrounded by the oceans around and are at the most vulnerable condition of present condition of climate change. It has been declared 2014 as International year of Small Island Developing States by United Nations General Assembly so as to work for the reduction of the possible risks and reduce impacts of the climate change which mostly affects these island states. With the slogan ?Raise your Voice, not the sea level? it has been celebrated the World Environment Day and its main aim is to make people aware about the present scenario of climate change and global warming and to make people to raise their voice for working to reduce and mitigate the impacts of changing environment. For the effective running of the programs and activities to make successful there is the great role of the youth. Youths are the pioneer for the action as they are with full of the enthusiasm and willingness to work and also the best medium to make people aware and to make them participate in the different programs. As in the present condition for the proper planning and action for the mitigation of the impacts of the climate change and for the overall development of the SIDS, youth can be the best medium for the action. They can play major role in the economic development of island countries through the action on the climate change, environmental degradation and natural hazards risk reduction. SIDS lie at the forefront of climate change impacts, sea-level rise, extreme weather patterns and ocean acidification, largely due to the continued burning of fossil fuels by developed nations. They are vulnerable to the global temperature rise, rise in the sea level and different climatic variability. In this situation there is lot of things to be done and youths should play the important role for that. Youth should come together and with the collaboration with the government and other NGO/INGOs they should plan for the combine action to strengthen programs and projects to monitor and improve predictive capacity for climate change, climate variability and sea level rise, and to assess the impacts of climate change on marine resources, freshwater and agricultural production. Youths can help in developing strategies and measures on adaptation to climate change as well as the development of technical guidelines and methodologies to facilitate adequate adaptation to climate change. Also, to make the environmentally sound condition and make people to go for the green environment and towards green economy by making access to alternative technology of conserving energy and energy efficient technology to assist for the development of small island developing states. Youths can have research, monitoring, surveying and assessment in the areas of the major climatic variability and the role of the oceans in the tidal variations and change in the climate and after having proper study can formulate integrated strategies for the sustainable management, mitigation and adaptation strategies for the reduction of the impacts of climate change. Thus, youth can play various role by reducing the impacts of the climate change by collaborating with the national policies and involving local communities in mitigation and adaptation of climate change and also creating mass awareness about the negative impacts of the land degradation and pollution and increasing afforestation programs and also by promoting the involvement of NGOs, indigenous people and other different groups in the conservation and sustainable use biodiversity for the sustainable SIDS. |

Since youth make up the largest community of the civil society, I believe that their role in making the world a better place by helping in development of small island states is crucial to the development of the world.
A very nice article Mr. Sunil. Cheers.

The point here is youth have to keep their voices up. It just like what President Barack Obama said, "Citizens, especially the next generation, you have to keep raising your voices, because you deserve to live your lives in a world that is cleaner and that is healthier and that is sustainable, but that's not going to happen unless you are heard."

I like the ideas you have enumerated and stated in this article Sunil. Yes it is true that youth stimulates knowledge and inspiration, uphold socio-environmental activism, engage to foster dialogue and unity, enforce environmental policies, advance the implementation, and wobble awareness among citizens and government. It is essential that the young decision makers of tomorrow will engage in the development decisions of today. It is time for the government to taste the reaped fresh perspectives, innovation and vigour of these young students, professionals and leaders in fulfilling the world we want. Nice report :)
