Nepal is the county of four castes and 36 sub castes, with diversified religion and culture. Nepalese people have their own religion, caste prevalent in their society. Gadamai festival is the month long hindu festival ,that is being celebrated in the duration of every five year at the gadimai temple of Bara district. The event involve the world second largest animal sacrificial slaughter. Thousands of devotees from the India and Nepal visit this festival. The collective spirit embodied in the Nepalese society through generation believe that animal sacrifice in the goddess gadimai will end the evil and bring prosperity.
The festival has been like a fair with the animals sacrifice as a main source of attraction. Many animals like pigeon, goat, duck, swine, male buffalo etc are being killed in the festival. The ritual killing were performed by more than 200 people in a concrete slaughterhouse near the temple. Even sometime , there occur the sort age of animal and people in that area urge local people to sell their livestock through radio call and other medium. It has been estimated that 500,000 animals were killed during 2009 festival.
Besides the animal sacrifice in festival, few human death has been recorded in that festival due to severe cold and chaos. In this era many animal activists, conservationist and many other international organization are giving pressure to stop this kind of cruelty against animal. Unfortunately, we are being mute in this sense, this year also gadaimai festival has been just started. This year also lots of animal will be killed in the name of ritual and culture. How pathetic is it to say, that every year we are killing those innocent creature in the name of god. Many controversies has been arised in this issue that, there is not this kind of culture written in the hindu book.Nepal government is not taking any initiatives stop it.
This festival includes not only killing the animals but also have various pollution to the environment. Severe disease may occur due to unmanaged animal sacrifice in the area. Regarding this festival various petition have been signed to stop animal massacre, still the governemet is mute. Its time to raise voice, many animals activists are heading towards gadimai festival to monitor the event and stop all those sacrifice of animals needlessly.Lets unite for it,its unhumanity !!!

Such topics disturb me :/ A lot of people are aware that are a lot of cruel acts against animals that go unheard, whether these acts are public or behind doors . But few speak up against atrocities, but you my friend have proven to be a fighter and a good activist :) let's hope such actions will stop as time goes by

Thanks for reporting Bhawana.
Keeping the religion neutral, all rituals practiced must be environmentally sustainable to the extent possible.
We can not please everybody & my belief is that GOD will never be pleased with killings. GOD is pleased with forgiveness, faith & Pray.

Thats soo sad. Animal also has the same right with human. We need each other and we have to be living together in this one Earth.

I dont know anything about this festival, but this article has peaked my interest. I question the motivation behind the objection to this festival. The author stated that it "may" cause damages, which isnt the greatest argument. I am very interested in hearing further opinions

With due respect to all religions ,customs , traditions and festivals , I strongly feel festivals should be celebrated in a sustainable manner without affecting any species. We can not please GOD by sacrificing animals. We don't have any right to kill someone else whether it is fellow humans or animals or birds or even trees. It's really ironic that we are in 21st century , still we have such orthodox beliefs. 500, 000 animals killed-My God! This is disturbing the ecological balance as well. Thanks for highlighting this grave issue, Bhawana.

This is when a society should reconsider its traditions. I hope they can find out a way to preserve the original spirit of the festival while ensuring the animals' rights.

Thanks Bhawana for highlighting the issues. Its sad to see such tradition is still in practice. Its up to us to go and convince and show them alternatives to such mass scarification.

Its the matter of the things that not only in the Gadaimai festival there are many other festivals in which the animals are sacrificed in the name to pleased the God but it is obviously the crucial act and leading to the condition of more violence in the our country, the peaceful Zone. So, we youths should raise the voice from our level to stop such action. Thanks Bhawana for writing about such pathetic issues ever existing.

Aw.This is such a tragic report Bhawana. I believe I don't want to raise up issues regarding religion and tradition. But I hope that the government thinks ways on implementing policies relating to the conservation and protection of the wildlife/fauna. May the government also weigh the possibilities on its intensity and impact to the overall score and importance. Let the youth be the voice of all the nation in your country. God bless.
