Will Mass prayer by tribal youths help to bring early rain in Jharkhand ?

by | 07-05-2012 19:48 recommendations 0

Around 200 nos. tribal people and farmers from the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand taken part in a prayer ritual believed to bring rain, outside the Hindu Lord Shiva temple in the state capital, Ranchi on May 6, 2012.

This  was a mass prayer by local Adibashi Jhrakhandis ( Original tribal peoples of Jharkhand) . The tribal youths had taken part in this prayer in the sunny day, when the day temperature had crossed 44 deg, C and in that hot weather they had taken pain to pray for 3 hours by lying down in the hot ground of the  temple of Lord Shiva.

Our View :- In place of plantation, protecting of forest , taking care of nature, it is easy to pray in one day.  Large of forest area of Jharkhand is reducing year after year.  Hardly many major initiative  to protect them. One environment ministry is there in the present government and need faster action to  over come the current situation. Will this prayer by tribal youths help to bring the rain early in Jharkhand ?

Till 1st. week of May 2012, the overall, the rain deficit in India is just 2 percent, making this one of the best monsoon in five years. However, in the Eastern part of India, the  overall rainfall deficit is as high as 21 percent. The report is shown in the attached map of India.

Drought has been declared in some parts of Jharkhand and  Bihar while the deficit faced by North-Eastern states is as high as 20 percent.

Our state Jharkhand is more desperate with rain deficiency of over 50 percent and 12 drought-hit districts. Our Neighbouring state Bihar is 24 percent short of rains and the seven North-Eastern states are facing a deficit of 20 percent.

Beside this pray,  which is needed is the   regain of  the forest area and  nature of the area. For which we all need to work honestly, regularly and effectively.

Not only tribal youths pray for the good mansoon, but our finance minister also prays for the good uniform mansoon for all over the country. A good mamsoon leads to good harvest, a good harvest drives the rural demand for industrial products, resulting over all growth of economy.

    The solution of proper rain

Need early rain? Rain? Rain ?
    Apply brain, brain, and brain.
Will we get it only by prayer?
Leaving all nature protection and care?

    Need huge rain? Rain? Rain?
Let us stop water drain, drain, drain.
Store them in pond or under ground
Stop misuse or loss, when found.

    Need timely rain? Rain? Rain?
Plan for nature gain, gain, and regain
Stop cutting of trees and save forest.
To save environment, let us be honest.

Need proper monsoon rain? Rain? Rain?
Let us ready to train, train and train,
To particular classes of people of our society.
To work for nature, beside praying to almighty.

I agree with Vandrangi's view as well. Unless the masses are educated and made aware of the real facts, comparing their traditional practices based on scientific awareness and the consequences won't be fair. The changing climate trends are forcing these helpless people to try their best in whatever ways. And I see no harm with such practices. These stuffs make them more optimistic towards their little lives with their own beliefs and principles. So in case someone's bothered particularly with the rituals, education is the closest right answer I guess.

They've raise voice knowingly/unknowingly about the issues. There fight is OURS! and ours duty is to take action and help them.

    Three steps: Awareness|Education|Take Action

    1. Awareness- Most important thing is if we're visiting to outside of any city then we find that people don't know about climate change, global warming, sustainable development. So, firstly let the people aware about environmental issues.

    2. Education- Education is second most important part of taking action because young people can't take action unless study about it. So, by promoting environmental education among youth either in school/college/camp. You've knowledge about it then teach them in any way.

    3. Take action- Awareness and education will together motivate the young people to take actions. That's all!

I completely agree with Christy. The focus ought to be on the action to be taken. The relation between people, their actions, climate change and reduction of rainfall increasing drought which further brings down the earning power should be stressed on.

I think it is not appropriate to directly point out the conventional belief.
So we may able to write about the relationship between Climate Change and
current severe drought. And we can also publish it to the local people too.

India is a land of ancient cultures and its very nice of you to highlight this age old custom . The important thing is that it is a people's movement and it is grabbing attention. With shrinking forest cover , rainfall is becoming less with every passing year and people who depend on this for their livelihood are getting affected . Thank you for bringing this to all our notice.

Good job Rajashree! Yes, I agree to Vandrangi's view. It is a really great work to bring this issue into focus. I think most of people don't know about these kind of rituals. They are another victim of the Climate Change. You wrote the local newspaper encourage them to keep going on.
    Is this true?

The idea behind this ritual is deeply rooted in our culture and belief system. I'm sure this must have been a thing of practice since ages.Whatever it is, if you observe natives ( tribes ) of any area are closely associated with nature and have evolved practices over years. I don't think it's fair to judge them. But I'm happy that this brought the issue into focus. Now it's up to us to do the needful. That's my opinion though! Thanks for bringing it up.
