Braeside High School takes pride in the natural environment. It is an Eco-School and is one of the schools in Kenya to fly the coveted Green Flag. Students are actively engaged in conservation efforts and so far have planted over 1000 trees, have initiated several waste management and recycling projects. To celebrate the environment, The Braeside High School community held the ?Flora and Fauna Day? on the 22nd of May 2012.
It was a day to educate the Braeside Community on the importance of biodiversity and its protection through sustainable development and environmental conservation as a whole.
The day started off with presentations during the school assembly that focused on biodiversity, our dependence on the environment, sustainable development, the effects of the destruction of the environment and the problems we face now because of it.
There were many activities throughout the day that were aimed at creating awareness by incorporating the subject of the day into the curriculum. Students participated in word searches of the different species of birds, reptiles, insects and plants during lessons. The Year 8 students had a full lesson on endangered species. There was also an Inter-house quiz on biodiversity to top it all off.
The foyer was filled with paintings, posters and notice boards with fun facts and educational material on animals and plants.
It was a great day for all of us and a great reminder of how much biodiversity we have lost and how much we still need to protect
