Mighty sequoia trees tower hundreds of feet in the air and can withstand intense environmental pressures. Lightning can strike them, fierce winds can blow and forest fires can rage around them. But the sequoia endures, standing firm only growing stronger through the trails.

One of the secrets to the strength of this giant tree is what goes on below the surface. Unlike many trees, they reach out and interlock their roots with the sequoias around them.

We are like the sequoias all of us here on the Eco-generation platform, strengthening our resolve against climate change and see to fulfillment the green economy envisioned by our leaders at the Rio+20 earth summit. The youth are important stake-holders in dealing with climate change and environmental sustainability because they will be more affected by these issues as they make up the future of mankind. If properly educated, young people can turn eco-friendly habits into a lifestyle which will be of great benefit to the earth. Making a change is now, we must tame our desire for fossil fuels and switch to low carbon energy sources. The question is, what does it take to change people?s ways? Increasing levels of awareness, being smart and slow, frugality-a wise use of resources or does nature hold the answers.

Our forests are invaluable sinks for carbon dioxide emissions. Unfortunately, they are being cut down at a rapid rate. Deforestation accounts for about 20% of global carbon emissions. Preventing the destruction of forests is an effective way of reducing the build-up of Greenhouse gases.
