If one were to take a broad look at matters that climate change has caused in Zambia, one would see that they connect to education and awareness. The main visible effects of climate change in Zambia are floods (which occur during the rainy season), partial droughts and irregular rain patterns as well as a general increase in temperature and a shift in the weather elements. Industries, certain agricultural practices, deforestation in some areas and individuals themselves—some unknowingly—contribute to carbon emission. Unfortunately, only a few industries in Zambia follow environmental regulations whilst others lack equipment, for instance, catalytic converters that would drastically reduce their carbon footprint. Also certain agricultural practices such as shifting cultivation (slash and burn), locally known as ?chitemene? similarly contribute to global warming as it causes deforestation and environmental degradation. In rural areas, deforestation is a big problem as people depend on cutting trees for charcoal production while others make a living by making wood products such as handicrafts and furniture. In addition, many individuals do not know how to live a ?green? lifestyle and for those who may know how to, it may be too expensive. Thus the main issue lies in how to get the message out and ensure that measures are taken to curb and cut carbon emissions.
Many people in Zambia, especially those in the rural areas who are the main victims, do not have access to information regarding climate change and know little or nothing about this global catastrophe which is already greatly affecting them. Majorities of the people do not know the actual cause of the change in climate in Zambia and do not have adequate knowledge and tolls that can help them in adapting and mitigating the issue. On the other hand, some of those who know of this matter see climate change as an issue that only affects the western world and they do not realize the full scale direct and indirect challenges that are being created by it. Similarly, some do not realize that the ones affected will be the future generations. If our communities can be educated and sensitized about climate change, its causes and the consequences that will happen if no action is taken, then they will begin to realize the importance of why it needs to be addressed now.
I have my work cut out for me, educating and raising awareness on the entire Zambia is great work and I love the challenge. To make my work effective I have added inspiration as the key spice to the meal to make it delicious enough for them to eat enjoy and share the meal with others.
One step at time an eco-generation is raising!
