Recycling - success story in Hotel business

by | 15-12-2014 02:46 recommendations 0

Since last couple of years, I am associated with Sharjah Radission Blue hotel in all their green initiatives and issues related to sustainability. Being a member of a big chain of hotels, they have taken up the actions required for a better future for all of us.
Apart from encouraging people from participating in their own re-cycling programmes, they are also in various actions to reduce energy, reduce waste, organic farming etc...

Recently I came across another similar story of another big hotel in UAE - Ramada Hotel, Aajman (UAE). The news have been published in local newspaper (www.gulfnews.com) and here is the extract :

1) The food waste, the bulk of its waste profile, is turned into compost, and used at an ?urban farm? in the parking lot.
2) 2 years back, the decision was taken to install the compost machine as 60 per cent of the waste is from the kitchen, the majority of which is food, vegetable peel, fruits, leftover food from buffet, banquet and staff restaurant.

3) From an average of 420kg-450kg of food waste, 10 per cent generates compost and the rest simply evaporates in the air.

4) Meanwhile, a third of the total daily waste is recyclables such as plastic, metal, paper, and cartridges which are

separated twice a day for sending them for recycling/selling.

With these measures, the hotel is saving 120,000 AED (approx 35,000 USD) per year as there is no cost associated with waste management company.

This shows the commercial way of handling the issues related to environmental pollution/landfill issues with simple thought process and willingness to do something for the society.

Big company should start raising their concern on environmental issues like this hotel in your article. they can create greater changes than us because they have money to invest in helping environment and are able to launch the actually-effective campaigns.

It is indeed a commercial way to handling environmental issue. This is what we call green industry, as a hotel industry mostly provides service and produce a lot of waste, in this case, initiatives take a good role on the industry. Great job for the hotel, good report from you Unmesh, keep it up!

Getting environmental and economic benefits while also managing the wastes. That's interesting news Umesh.
What I like most is the use of compost in the urban farm.

These are indeed practical ways to save money & take care of nature as well. Many hotels are coming up with similar drives. This must be encouraged & continued at full throttle.
    Thanks for sharing Unmesh.
