Green Festivals - Additional Ideas

by | 29-12-2014 08:37 recommendations 0

Hello Friends,

In this article we will further explore the topic of ?green holidays?. Green holidays are a way of making our festivities and times of joy more environmentally friendly. In the previous article we looked at how we can make some changes to our festivities to be greener and more ecofriendly during this time of the year. In this article we will be exploring some more options as well as discussing some of the ideas which were brought out through the comments from the previous article.

So, firstly let?s explore some more ideas of how we can integrate green living into our festive season. Here is a list of these ideas:

1.       During festivals across many cultures, fireworks are a common part of the festivities. However, often times people may not realize how harmful cheap and common fireworks can be to the environment. Fireworks create noxious smoke which contains sulphur, heavy metals and coal compounds. These can damage the environment as well as pollute local air holding potential to damage the health of local residents. Therefore, it is very important to choose certified safe and ecofriendly fireworks. While traditional fireworks have a sulphur and charcoal base fuel, ecofriendly fireworks have a cleaner burning nitrogen base fuel. We can also refraining from using the large quantity of fireworks during our celebrations. By limiting the amount of fireworks and changing the type, we can cut down on the environmental damage posed by them.

2.       Furthermore, during many festivals in some cultures there are decorations, statues or idols which are made from harmful inorganic plasters and harmful paints. This type of decoration or idols are less harmful to the environment is made from organic clays.

Now, discussing some of the things which were brought up through the insightful comments in the previous article.

?span style="font-stretch: normal font-size: 7pt font-family: 'Times New Roman'">         @ChristyLee commented on the very interesting of alternate ideas for Christmas trees. By making paper decorated trees or simply decorating the trees in our garden, we can solve the issue of cutting down Christmas trees or buying synthetic trees.

?span style="font-stretch: normal font-size: 7pt font-family: 'Times New Roman'">         Also, @NgoHaiMinh suggested the great idea of recycling the wrapping paper we use to wrap the gifts distributed at this time. This is also a very simple practice which has been done in my home for years and indeed does make a difference.

These are indeed simple ideas for having green festivals. However, often times the best solutions are the simplest one because they can easily be integrated into our daily lives.

So, if you have any more ideas or suggestions to discuss on this topic please share them! May this festive season be the most joyous for you and may the New Year bring lots of happiness and prosperity!

Best Regards,

Nitish

'Green Festivals' is a very noble idea, Nitish.

I feel that decoration that we make on any festival must be done with recycled material like used paper, cardboard, Shredded paper, Used CDs, used cloth etc.
We can be innovative & artistic.
Use of fresh material may be avoided. This will save a lot of Paper & other decoration that we use in many different festivals in all parts of the world.

Thank you all for your kind comments and valuable insight!
@BinduBhandari: This is indeed a great idea. I know that during the time of festivities I personally do a lot of shopping. And if we even used reusable bags (eg. cloth bags) for the items then we could cut down on the waste plastic bags.
@ArushiMadan: Yes! This would be a really good idea...incorporating the need for protecting the environment into our festivities. Definitely a great idea which I will personally try to implement into my festive season.

I personally feel that we should plant at least one tree on such important occasions or festivals to commemorate them and to contribute towards environment. Imagine if it becomes culture to plant trees on all festivals -(one by every family) , how green our Earth would be !

Hey Nitish,Wow useful information about celebrating festivals in environment friendly way. I would like to add one more point. Generally during festive seasons we do lots of shopping and with more packages more plastic bags probably enter our homes. So it is a better idea to carry our own reusable degradable bag during shopping :)

I Like how most of you guys read and research far-fetched information about matters concerning our behaviour and lively-hoods towards the environment. Job well done Nitish!!

Excellent report Nitish! I completely agree that often the best solutions are the simplest one because they can easily be integrated into our daily lives. Taking small steps can often lead in making the 'BIG CHANGE'. If we imbibe green values, in a short period, it will become a part of our lives.
