South Asian Youth Conference SAYC 2014
A very Happy New Year to everyone out here. It has been a very interesting and eventful year with lots that happened all throughout the year. This is the year when I completed school and joined IIT Kharagpur, decided to major in Computer Science and Engineering. Also in 2014, Green the Gene, completed 10 years, since 2004, when we founded the organization.
This Christmas, on the 25th of December, 2014, I was invited to speak and deliver a session at the South Asian Youth Conference, SAYC 2014. I spoke at and hosted the session called - "Youth Led Initiatives - from Ideation to Implementation by Madhav Datt, Founder President, Green the Gene", which was excellently attended and received.
The SAYC 2014 is an annual conference hosted by Blue Ribbon Movement (BRM), with its mission to identify the most effective role that youth can play in development promote peace in the South Asian region with the pivotal role being played by the youth promote ideas that convert into action projects that brings peace in the whole region and promotes trust and co-operation among the youth of the South Asian countries promote Youth-led Development as a constructive and effective way to make poverty history in a sustainable way – combating climate change, encouraging low-carbon development demonstrate a wide variety of ways that youth can do development by selecting local action projects that show where youth-led development is most effective combine the efforts to combat climate change and those to achieve the MDGs in a single, coherent strategy for sustainable development encourage youth to learn the skills to be able to develop Green Economy Business innovations draw attention of the world – especially the youth – to the new, successful, youth of South-Asia promote Dialogue and mutual understanding between the Youth of the South Asian region and create a common platform for them to combat extremism, racial and national hatred, and resolve misunderstandings train South Asian youth in advocacy skills to enable them to take leadership roles in the mobilisation of South Asian youth to make a meaningful contribution to the Youth Statements, and to gather examples of what youth are already doing in South Asian to build the Green Economy, and live sustainable lifestyles.
The SAYC series has received very positive response from the South Asian youth. It has become a focal point for young, highly influential change makers to connect, collaborate and build relationships. It has been successful in getting young emerging leaders to engage in stimulating conversation, alignment efforts and joint action plans. The outcome of the SAYC has been the development of the South Asian Good News Channel (https://www.facebook.com/sa.good.news) - a Facebook channel initiated by a participant from SAYC.
After I finished speaking at my hour long session at the SAYC 2014 on youth led initiatives (I will try to bring out the core of the session and all the discussion that followed, maybe in another article, right here at the Eco-Generation Platform). An excellent session, followed by a Q&A period, attended extremely enthusiastic and passionate youth activists from all over South Asia, with whom I talked about youth led projects and encouraged them to go out there and take up some on-ground initiatives. I am hoping to see some concrete action and productive grassroots initiatives emanating from this session
