Africa Largest Wind Park at Lake Turkana. Kenya transition toward a green economy |
---|
UNDP energy report (2009) indicates that almost a quarter of the world's 6 billion people live without electricity .The majority of the 1.5 billion people who have no access to electricity are in the least developed countries of South Asia and Sub Saharan Africa. It is estimated that only 23% of Kenya population has access to electricity (World Bank, 2010) therefore this project is ideal and sustainable towards meeting the needs of local people. Kenya is dependent on three forms of energy namely biomass that account for about 70% of the total energy consumption Petroleum 21% and Electricity 9% . Biomass sources of energy is not sustainable, further to that it has health hazards associated to it due to indoor pollution. Equitable access to energy services is critical for sustainable growth and achieving Millennium Development Goals. In the past Hydro power has constituted over 70-80 % of electricity source while other forms of renewable energy such as Geothermal, Solar and Wind remained unexploited. Kenya meets an impressive proportion of energy demands from renewable source-70% from biomass is really very good. Lake Turkana Power project seems huge and will offer significant strategic benefits to Kenya . Out of curiousity, I tried to know more about this project specially if the proper feasibility study was done before finalising the site. I am happy to read from various sources that this lake site was selected following an extensive survey of the region focusing on environmental, social and sustainability, technology and commercial considerations, including the remoteness of the area, the strength and stability of the winds, proven technology, benign environmental setting, low population density, security of the area, fresh water availability and road accessibility. In addition, in order to avoid possible bird contact with the turbines, the proposed wind farm is sited at least 9 km from the shore of Lake Turkana. A 12 month ornithological study has been concluded and annual environmental audits will be done for the entire wind farm during the 20 year operations period.
Looks like authorities are working on it in a very professional , responsible and sustained manner. All the best.

It's very impressive that 70% of energy is sourced from the Biomass! I would love to hear about it more thorough you :) And living in a green country is really honorable thing. Congratulations Samuel.

I agree totally @ Bindu, Rohan & Namira . Thanks alot for your comments ,Kenya decision to low carbon pathway is brilliant.I feel glad when I note commitment involved when it comes to technology transfer to local people /industry involved in energy and financial support part .

WoW, Samuel! 300 MW Lake Turkana Wind Power Project is an excellent example of sustainable energy. This will make sure that more population of Kenya will have access to power.

Dear Samuel Thank you for sharing this report. So happy to know about Africa's largest wind farm. For sure it will aid in access to electricity in Kenya. Furthermore, sparely populated area is chosen for this purpose and it is sustainable too :)
