Waste Management and its solution

by | 21-02-2015 18:08 recommendations 0

Recently I got the news that the solid waste depositing site of the Kathmandu city has been completely filled. Then I was worried about the upcoming condition of the city which would be full of waste around the public roads and rivers bank.  A rapid population growth without any proper city planning and governance creates this sort of program in our country. Waste management has been always a issue in our city and this often disrupts the environment of the city.

I had the chance to visit the dumping site which is almost one and half hour drive from the city. There I could see the heaps and heaps of waste deposited. The area was not managed at all. The people were did not have proper attire to prevent the health hazard occurring due to long time exposure from the waste. Although the area is big, the people have not been able to recycle the waste using the concept of waste segregation and recycling.

Even the people living near the site protested in the past regarding the hazard of exposure of the waste to their health and the health of their cattle's and crops. In the village area waste management is not a great deal as most of the household waste are turned into manure and they reuse the plastic product as it is limited in number.

But in the city area it is a different story. People haphazardly use the plastic and do not reuse it due to its availability. And again due to lack of space, time and initiation all combined people do not turn their house hold products into manure. As a result a lot of waste in generated from each home, creating a problem to manage the waste. The government from the policy making level to implementation level do not work smartly in order to change the condition of the country.

I have long been wondering how I can change this trend in the city.

All those who are reading this post please suggest me what can I do in order to change the city. Also please write about how the waste is managed in your city.

I am really really eager to know about it.

  • Arushi Madan says :
Municipalities should place coloured bins in and around the city for promoting waste segregation.
Awareness level should be increased among residents and 3 Rs (Reduce , Reuse and Recycle) should be promoted . People should be educated by mass media as well through TV , radio about harmful consequences of improper waste management.
Incentive programs should be launched to tempt residents to collect and give recycleables.
Dumpyards should be managed by municipality through staff who should be given proper gloves , clothes and vaccination to prevent health hazards. Dumpyard should not be in vicinity of residential area.
