Bagmati River

Bagmati River has always been a topic of concern from environmental aspect in Kathmandu city. It is a holy river in which people used to take holy bath and drink water from it as a holy water. The river which flows through Pashupatinath temple (one of the renowned religious place for Hindu in the world), is in dreadful conditions since last 15 years. How it became so then?

Due to the factors such as great facilities and security as well as employment opportunities many people migrated to Kathmandu from the remote villages and other cities of Nepal. The population increased at a greater rate. Then the government and the local governing body could not design and implement the program and activities in order to manage the household and drainage waste. The ultimate solution was to link the drainage pipes to the free flowing river Bagmati. This created a lot of problem and thus gave rise to polluted Bagmati.

Although a lot of program was organized and is going on till today the Bagmati never became like before in the past, clean and free flowing. A lot of cleaning program takes place and even government comes up with various initiations but the Bagmati don't change its condition. The reason was pretty simple, the drainage being connected to the river. A big amount of waste and drainage daily deposits into the river and how hard the citizens try to clean the river it is impossible to clean the Bagmati which is being connected to the drainage from million of home.

Finally the government has realized the fact and has now been working in order to manage the drainage of the city in more organized and proper manner. It plans to make drainage at the edge of the Bagmati so that the waste and drainage do not mix with the river. This step will bring a radical change in the condition of the Bagmati River. Although the free flow of the river will be disturbed due to less flowing space it is better than what was in the past and people are accepting this step with warm smile. Hope this project will get completed soon and within a year or so we will be able to see the clean Bagmati once again.

Decision of routing the drainage to river was bad but at least now govt has realised and is taking corrective action-better late than never. All the best. Hope to see the picture of clean river very soon .

Drainage must be disconnected from any river or ocean.
It can be treated to water the landscaping areas. Residue can be used as manure. There are many ways to discourage polluting the rivers & oceans.
