The earth is facing its most serious challenge, as a species in the web of life, man is rapidly destroying the foundation of his/her very existence. Nature is the place where we open our eyes, play our part, eat, spend our life times and where finally our body will be turned into ashes. In this context, the earth also have its carrying capacity and we people are developing various methods and techniques to cope with limited space. Every people want to live the luxury life and the increasing settlement in urban area leads to many problem. Regarding this scenario, people in the urban area are developing the garden in their roof, that might be vegetables or other decorative flowers in the top of the house.

Rooftop gardens, also called living roofs or green roofs, have many advantages, including providing more space for agriculture, adding beauty to the cityscape and increasing air quality. During photosynthesis, plants remove carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen that we need to breathe. In the context of Nepal especially in the big cities like Kathmandu,Nepaljung,Pokhara,Butwal etc increasing migration of people in the urban area are limiting the various resources and services used. Regarding these issues, many people in the area are practicing roof top garden. People cultivate green vegetables like tomato, onion, garlic etc, it not only increases beauty but in some extent people get green and fresh vegetable. Likewise some people plant decorative flowers on their roof which add the beauty at the same time fresh air and green environment can maintain the sound health. On hot summer days, rooftop gardens may also keep buildings cooler than traditional roofs especially larger buildings that often have tar and gravel roof surfaces.

We can see lots of people in the urban area are busy in making their surrounding clean and green engaging them in making garden in their own house during their leisure time.It is cheap and easy to practice as well.People?s increasing love towards roof top garden is contributing in some extent to our mother earth. This is the pioneer and the best practice that can be adopted by people even in the large or in small city.

Thanks , Bhawana , for highlighting the advantages of rooftop gardens. Here in UAE , unfortunately we all (expatriates) live in flats/apartments in high rise towers so roof top is infact not even accessible .

Thank you for the nice introduction on the rooftop garden. I have a 'practical' roof top garden in my house. We grow our daily veges on it so it not only good for the environment but it saves the living cost of our family :) I would love to recommend it to anyone I know.
