Garbage Management in Sapporo, Japan

by | 17-03-2015 14:06 recommendations 0

I have been staying in Japan for 7 months. During my stay here, I realized there are many green habits that people accustomed to do that. That is garbage management. In Japan, especially in Sapporo, government make a strict rule to their residents to deal with garbage. Before I came to Japan, I only separate garbage to organic and inorganic garbage. But, in Japan, there are much more complex garbage managements, from the garbage category separation, plastic that used for wrapping garbage, and certain date to throw away garbage.

Garbage is separated not only to inorganic and organic garbage, but also to five categories, namely burnable garbage non burnable garbage mixed paper garbage plastic package and container garbage: and bottle, can and pet bottle garbage. By separating garbage in detail, it can ease recycle processes.

Regarding the plastic that used for wrapping garbage, in some parts of Japan, especially in Sapporo city, because it is my living city, there is plastic usage difference among type of garbage. To wrap garbage, there are two kind of plastic that can be used, white or transparent plastic and yellow plastic. White or transparent plastic is for paper, plastic and bottle/can wastes while yellow plastic is for burnable and non-burnable wastes. This different plastic colour can help garbage management to manage their wastes. Only recyclable wastes that is inserted to the white or transparent plastic.

In case of big size electronic machine like TV, washing machine, and so on, the government does not collected this garbage. City resident have to send this waste to the specialist contractor to manage this garbage.

There are some lessons that can be taken from this City garbage management. Firstly, separating garbage can be useful for further waste recycling, like what I explained before.

Indirectly, people will prefer to produce less waste not only to keep environment clean, but also for economical purpose. Having much big waste mean paying much money, so people will prefer to use second-hand product or do not use that thing if not too useful. Is most of the shop, plastic bag is not for free, so people bring their own shopping bag or reuse other plastics.

Secondly, it will not that easy to apply this regulation in other countries, so we can start to do this garbage management from the small scale and step by step to the larger scale. We can start from our family and do waste reduce, reuse and recycle. If it already established the smallest scale, we can try to influence our school friends or our neighbours to do the same thing. If we do it in the school or in the neighbourhood, we can initiate school and neighbourhood garbage management system. From the small scale, we can bring significant impact in the future.

Wow, it's very systemic and well organized :) In Korea, there are also rules and guides for garbage segregation. But as the level of awareness is somehow not enough so we are confused when we stand before the trash cans and end up with choosing a wrong garbage can. What you've shown is really efficient and worth of bringing to Korea for better waste management. Thank you for sharing, Mukhlish!

Thanks for explaining the waste management of Sapporo city in details!! Actually South Korea has similar level of waste management policy. At first, it was difficult to adopt, because it has complicated regulations on the separation, but as time goes, people can learn about it from the various channels and get used to the regulations. If government drives, it shall succeed!!!

Nice to understand excellent waste management prog of Japan.
Similarly, In UAE as well the segregation takes place. It is not mandatory but is obligatory.
I think as we are in initial stages that's why it is optional.
Subsequently, the waste management has to be enforced so that it is effective to its core.

Hi Arushi,, yeah, and when we make mistake on waste disposal date, the garbage will be back to you..
So, lets implement this system on our environment.

Yes Bindu, they also recycle the electronic waste to be other useful products..
    cheers..

WOW! What an efficient waste segregation and management system you have there .
It is true -if one has to pay for the waste then automatically they will consume judiciously and waste less.
Agree with you that we should implement such system in our building or school premise or neighbourhood and then to compounds /complexes and bigger regions.
    Thanks for sharing.

Separating garbage into five categories. Wow! an effective rule in Japan
.Also, contacting the contractors themselves for disposal of large electronic devices will make the public more responsible towards waste management.
Yeah, I totally agree in we can start from our home this separation methodology and spread it slowly to a wider mass. Cheers :)
