UNUSUAL SCENES AT THE IFITE-UNIZIK ROAD

by | 27-03-2015 04:31 recommendations 0

In the last over half a decade, the people of Anambra state has been used to the waste management agency coming to pack away the huge waste packed by the people in the waste receptacles provided along the street.
The Anambra State Waste Management Agency(ASWAMA) -the body charged with managing waste in the state- has been doing a good job evacuating the wastes from the receptacle in a reasonable space of time until recently.

Now, while joining our radio station's staff bus home, we had to take many routes to ensure that all our staff members(both student staff and permanent staff) are taken home or at least very close to home. It was in one of this journeys that I discovered a mammoth waste dump on the roadside in a major students area.
The heap of that waste dump,to say the least, is frightening and according to my friends who live around the area, it's now close to two months since that waste heap started accumulating and ASWAMA has chosen to ignore it.
But that, is just about the biggest of waste dumps that have recently been left unattended by the waste management officials.
I trekked down the road to take pictures of the very ugly sites in the company of two of my friends who live in the area.

Also, the waste has gotten to the annoying extent that students living in a particular area now chose to burn theirs in that receptacle since the waste management officials are nowhere to be found.
I saw the burnt waste yesterday-as captured in my pictures- it was indeed an ugly site and the helpless students living in the area could only think of burning the waste. I just imagine how much of the dangerous gases were introduced into the atmosphere. It was a terrible option they took.

I captured three sites but still noticed that there were some more as I made my way home.
I just called the commissioner for environment, Chief Evarist Uba, to inform him of the situation along the Ifite-unizik road and he pleaded that we talk about it after this Saturday's elections in Nigeria.
I will surely follow it up.

I was shocked to see such mountain of waste dumps and that too in open/public area. This not only poses serious threat to the beauty of the city but also is a big risk to the healths of residents around. Glad to read that you reported the probem and fulfilled the role of an environment ambassador. Pl do keep us posted on further development (hope this gets resolved ). Thanks for sharing.

@Emecheta: They have a waste management agency but they seriously slowed the pace off their work at least in this area.
I want to know what the problem is when I speak with the commissioner next week.

You did a great job, Udeh! I couldn't help but smiling very big after I found out that you got off the bus to take the pictures. As we all know recognition of the problem is key for tangible solution. I am so proud of you and I am sure your plan will work with your networks and great publicity of your radio broadcasting. I wish you the best and look forward to your update.

Wooow... thought they have built a waste management plant in Anambra? Confused why such a huge waste should remain in such a public area. Thanks bro, follow it up because I don't want to return home and meet such in my home town.
