Seychelles impliments a BAN - Importation of aquarium living organisms |
---|
"There is now a complete ban on the importation of all aquarium living organisms". Source: Seychelles Today Newspaper. Ministry of Environment Energy and Climate Change with the help of Veterinary Services and Ministry of Finance addressed the concerns of the Seychelles's amphibians.
Around the world, there has been a significant decline in the population of amphibians, and the Chytrid fungus may be behind it!! An infectious disease in amphibians!! It has been presumed that the fungus may have occurred naturally and was only identified recently because it has become more virulent.
The fungus is mostly transmitted through the pet trade and importation of live freshwater organisms.
The Seychelles, has six endemic frogs, which is potentially at risk, which includes the world's tiniest sooglossid frogs and so others. Seychelles Authorities seem to be acting fast, because they have had many screening programmes for this fungus, till now, results are negative. (results of the test: www.facebook.com/todayinsey/posts/802362323134913)
I personally feel happy that the authorities did a great job to carry out the test and place the ban quickly.
"The ministry and its partners are said to be considering ways on how to issue licenses to certain registered local companies who will have to produce relevant documents obtained from regulated overseas facilities that have good health screening systems" Source: Seychelles Today Newspaper For more information: Chytrid Fungus www.amphibianark.org/the-crisis/chytrid-fungus Tiniest Frog |

Great job with the ban. Thank you for sharing vivid news about it, Shafira :)
As Anthony mentioned, it's awesome to get real-time news of Seychelles from you.
Importing living things can cause serious damage on endemic ecosystem like the fungus.
Different case though, imported warms devastated pine forests of Korea to almost its extinction.

It is good to know that the authorities handled the situation timely and aptly by placing a ban on pet trade.Issuing licenses to certain local companies and the concept of health screening systems can curb the predicament in an efficient manner. Thanks for the report:)
