Earth Hour Celebrations |
---|
Earth Hour is an event turned movement for Mother Earth on 29th March from 8:30 and 9:30. It started as a lights off event in Sydney, Australia and soon spread to more than 7000 cities worldwide. It is an annual event organized by WWF.
During this day people from all over the world turn off their lights for that one hour 8:30 to 9:30. Earth hour is the world?s largest environmental action on climate change. Earth Hour is one of the several initiatives celebrated by UAE throughout the year to spread awareness amongst community members on conservation, environmental protection, and building a sustainable future for the country.
From its beginnings in just one city in 2007, it has become a global phenomenon reaching out to 1.8 billion people worldwide today in over 7000 cities across the globe.
An impressive reduction in electricity use of 305 MWh and a reduction of 183 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions was achieved during Earth Hour 2015 in Dubai.
I volunteered with my organization Green Globe, an environmental youth organization, in the Earth Hour Celebrations held at Al Majaz Waterfront organized by the Environment And Protected Areas Authority. There were a wide range of activities held including Band Performances from Green Globe members, free T-shirt and Glow Bands distribution and using only candle lights. People from all walks of life including families, students etc. participated in it.
Our world is facing a crisis presently due to significant increase in the population due to which there is an increasing demand for energy and resources.
Through Green Globe, I had also organized a ?Design a Light Bulb? Contest for the Earth Hour in which participants had to design a light bulb to create awareness about protecting our Earth which saw an enthusiastic participation from its members. Winners were given certficates and vouchers.
You can find the entries in the following link: https://www.facebook.com/
I encourage everyone to participate in this worldwide movement and reduce their carbon footprint. You can even take this to the next step by observing an Earth Hour every day. |

I feel so proud of you to see there holding the Tunza Eco-generation Banner. I am so proud that you don't stop with just preaching eco-messages but you gathered your team and went out for real action. Great job done by you and your team!
