|BRAZIL| Trash into Energy Project

by Luiz Bispo | 05-06-2015 12:02 recommendations 0

Will a large amount of the waste be useless? The current population of Brazil is close to 200 million. Brazil's greatest waste management faces the difficulty so that municipal authorities and lawmakers have tried to improve their cities system in order to overcome their hurdle.

In this respect, I found an interesting and useful project related to this context.

There are factories which transform the trash into energy in the state of Rio Grande do Sul Brazil.

The first thermal energy was generated in the landfill on Tuesday, 2th June in the state of Minas Gerais. Up to 15 Megawatts of Biothermal Energy was produced with an investment of R$ 30 million, which is an enough amount of energy for approximately 80 thousand inhabitants.

Interestingly, the landfill of the municipality receives 3.5 thousand tones of urban garbage from Porto Alegre and other 130 cities everyday and the fuel is the methane generated from this landfill. Santa Maria City and Leopoldo City are ready to be the next plants with license from State Environmental Protection Foundation (FEPAM), which will be launched in 2016.

Even though the factories are ready to operate, it is necessary to attend the emissions test offered by FEPAM and then, the authorization of the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) start to commercialize it in 15 days. The relevant productions were sold at auction and the rest will be sold on the free market.

In this respect, municipalities in Brazil have put a great effort to have creative solutions for environmental problems. This project will be one of the efficient ways for sustainable energy supply.
