Evolution and diversity of Tomato leaf curl disease complex in Pakistan

by | 13-07-2015 15:19 recommendations 0

Tomato leaf curl disease (ToLCD) is an important limiting factor for tomato, vegetable and ornamental crops in the Pakistan. Symptoms of ToLCD include severe upward and downward leaf curl with cup-shape, yellowing and stunted plant growth. This disease is caused by begomoviruses (single-stranded DNA viruses (family Geminiviridae) that are transmitted by whiteflies). The begomoviruses are either bipartite (with two genomic components known as DNA A and DNA B), monopartite (with a genome homolog of DNA A component of bipartite begomoviruses) or monopartite associated with DNA satellites (mainly betasatelites). All three types of begomoviruses are main player in ToLCD complex.   An overview presenting the emergence and evolution of ToLCD in Pakistan and its effect on future food security  future security and their control  is discussed.

I am an agriculture undergraduate student and learned this in one of my plant pathology classes around two semesters ago. And yes, this disease is just sad. However, one of the ways our university researchers got the chance to lessen it's impact is by improving the soil conditions through enriching the soil with indigenous microfauna. It's also lessened if we use ecological methods such as plant barriers, alternate strips, etc. At the end of the day, it is still all about proper farm management.
