|BRAZIL| Indigenous people outbreak

by Luiz Bispo | 24-07-2015 11:36 recommendations 0

In each country, there are some demonstrations to achieve their own will. Some women claim a right for female equality, the youth long for the better education and labors look forward to having a great condition for them etc. It is very familiar to watch those kinds of people on the street but hard to imagine indigenous people want to fight against the government at the risk of their life. Today, I will introduce you the Munduruku Indian's resistance against Brazil's government decision.

As the Brazil government made a decision to build the dams on the Tapajós River, The Munduruku tribe started to protest. They concerned that the planned dams will destruct rainforests where they live and actually, an illegal mining and logging on their land have happened. In light of this, the leader of this tribe announced that the Brazilian government developed the hydroelectric power plants in the Amazon, which has broken the international law and Brazilian constitution.

According to own constitution, the Indians should receive all their land in Brazil by 1993. The government keeps avoiding to solve this issue with indigenous people, which make Indians to take a dramatic action. Even they announced that they are prepared to die to stop dam construction.

In fact, there have been a lot of pressures from campaigners so that the government stopped to progress the plan for dam construction. However, it might start to proceed this project again. Furthermore, they plan to build 60 dams in Amazon over the next 20years. Therefore, Munduruku leader is also prepared to protest against this problem with public prosecutor.

The website that I found this source quotes the message from a little Indian boy in Brazil. Lastly, I would like to introduce this message to here.

"We have to depend on the land and on our rights.

It's important that the land and animals are not finished

 yet"

                                                        - Cinta Larga, Brazil.

It is time to think what it will happen when people overuse their power to destroy other ones who cannot have a big voice. I believe it will return with a huge regret.

Dear Luiz, this saddening issue reminded me of GYELS MUN, 2015 where the background was more or less similar about construction of transboundary dam. Indigenous people have right to live and shelter and no one can override their rights. This is really a serious issue and needs to be addressed in time so that the conflict doesn't make the situation go worst. Development at the cost of peoples' rights can never be a sustainable. Global advocacy should be there for vulnerability and compensation of those innocent indigenous people.
Thank you for this update dear Luiz :)

While constructing and paving a way to our modern methods of development and sophistication, we must take into account the sentiment of Indigenous people who have been using naturals resources since ages. This indeed needs to be echoed everywhere. Thanks for sharing on Tunza mates. Hope for the best!!!

Glad that campaigners' pressure worked and govt has stopped the dam work for a while. Hope they get some senses and think of environment and stop this project for ever. It's really sad that dams like these are being built at the cost of greenery , environment and livelihood of local people . Thanks for updating us , Luiz.
Let's hope and pray that govt looks into the interests of local people and rethinks on this project.

This is so sad. This story needs to be heard worldwide so that the government can think once more about the greener economy. Hope that government can find a wiser way to consider our Mother Earth.
