My Experience as a Guest Teacher

by | 24-07-2015 16:17 recommendations 0

(Dear Eco- warriors, first of all I would like to apologize for posting this report quite late. Actually the camera where I had photos had some problem but it's repaired now and I can recover the pictures)

In the early morning on 22nd June at about 7am I received a call and surprisingly it was from Mrs. Mina Gurung, principal of Grandee English Boarding School, Chitwan Nepal. At first she congratulated me for my achievements till now and she requested me if I had time to take the classes of Environment, Health and Population Studies (EHP) for Grade 9 and 10 for a week. "Actually the teacher of EHP is ill and is at bed rest, and who else would be better than you as a guest teacher for us" she said. Also she added that, she would be happy to welcome me from the same day. I was surprised and excited at the same time. Just imagine how lucky I felt to be invited as a guest teacher in the school where I was once a student. I thankfully accepted the invitation and joined the same day.

When I reached the school at about 1.45pm, I was nostalgic as my childhood roamed around my eyes. I would like to share with you all that I was honored as the most disciplined student of my batch and awarded as BEST STUDENT OF THE BATCH during my school time. The greenery of school periphery added charm in its beauty. I greeted the teachers and other staffs they were asking me about my trip Korea and my experience. They said that they have been following my works through Facebook. Principal Ma'am told that she feels proud that I am her student. I was elated and felt blessed to hear all these kind loving words. For a week i.e. 22 June to 30th June I took three classes each day. I used to reach school by 1.50pm and took classes from 2.15- 4.30pm. There were 31 students in Grade 9 B, 44 students in Grade 10 A and 38 students in Grade 10 B.

For Grade 9 I taught the topics like causes and effects of population growth, factors causing environmental degradation and how health, population and environment are interrelated. The topics were mainly focused in the context of Nepal. With increasing population at the rate of 1.35% and increased demand of resources, forest and other natural resources are encroached at an alarming rate. High illiteracy, lack of proper use of family planning devices, social traditions and dogmas like more children, more wealth etc are contributing to increased population due to which the quality of life is hard to attain. Similarly for Grade 10 A and B, I taught the topics like measures of population change (Birth, death and migration. I wrote the formula for measuring fertility, mortality and migration like Crude Birth Rate, Age- specific fertility rate, Crude Death Rate, Net migration rate, sex ratio etc. I first illustrated the examples and gave them assignments and clarified what these rates imply. Similarly, the next topic was quality of life and the factors necessary to attain quality of life.

On Sunday i.e. 28th June I introduced them to Tunza Eco- generation as a CSR program of Samsung engineering and my responsibilities as a regional ambassador, how youths can work together for a green globe, what I have done and what they can do regarding the pressing environmental issues. I took a group photo in each class, students were very happy to know that their photos will be added in the report and youth from different parts of the world would have access to the report. They stood up and gave me a huge round of applause when I told them about my selection in GYELS, 2015. I nearly burst into tears of joy seeing their respect and appreciation for me.

Some green facts about Grandee English Boarding School which I am pleased to share with you all:

1. The school is located in a peaceful area with enough space and green periphery with abundant blooming colorful flowers

2. There is a dust bin in each class and students sweep their classroom turn wise everyday in the morning and at lunch break (This initiative actually started from my batch, I was the class monitor at Grade 4 and we collected money, bought broom and dust pan and used to sweep our classroom turn wise. I was more than happy to see this green trend still followed by the students)

3. Students come to school either on foot, school bus or bicycle all of which are eco- friendly

4. There is dustbin in each classroom and offices waste collected from each room is disposed properly by school management staffs

5. Students either bring lunch box themselves or buy at school canteen. School canteen uses metal plates to serve lunch instead of plastic materials

6. Students bring reusable water bottle by themselves from home

Overall, the waste generated is minimal as the students and school management has focused on going GREEN LIVING.

Thus, in this way I was more than lucky to spend wonderful week of my life as a guest teacher in Grandee English Boarding school. Founder, teachers, staffs and students all gave me lots of warm wishes, loved and appreciated me for my efforts and thanked me for accepting the invitation. Students said "We will miss you miss" while seeing off on the last day. I returned back with lots of interwoven memories and a big smile of happiness.

Bindu Di: It was more than obvious to me that you would have been the BEST STUDENT in your school life as you are the best in whatever you do.
Really it would have been a nostalgic and a very cherishing experience being on the other side of the bench in the same school. The topics too were so relevant to your passion , your field ..I am sure students must have enjoyed and learnt a lot during your teaching times. Be prepared you would get a call from the school to join them for ever .
I am so glad that you promoted Tunza Eco Gen there too , that's really nice.
You look so pretty in pictures here.
Finally thanks for a very well written report .
