Global Tiger Day

by | 30-07-2015 23:40 recommendations 0

There are many tiger subspecies in the world that you could find in Asia, Africa and South America. Indonesia has its own native tiger which is called Sumatran Tiger. This tiger subspecies is found only on the Indonesia island of Sumatra.

Global Tiger Day is an annual celebration to raise care about tiger conservation. Celebrated every July 29, was first conceived in Tiger Summit in Saint Petersburg in 2010. The purpose of this celebration is to protect the natural habitat of tigers and raise public awareness of the issue of tiger conservation.

Indonesia with the life of the forest is home to the Sumatran tiger (Phantera Tigris sondaica). Sumatran tiger population increasingly endangered, as the deforestation of Sumatra forest increased. Sumatra's remaining forests (calculated in 2014) is 10.8 million hectares or only 25% of the total living area of the entire island of Sumatra. In other word, the rate deforestation reached 500 thousands hectares per year, or about one hectare per minute.

With so much deforestation and poaching in Sumatra, wild tigers face a very difficult future. According to the Sumatran Tiger Conservation Strategy, Sumatran tiger population is fewer than 400. This data is supported by IUCN Cat specialist group released in 2002.  which state that ?because of the scarcity, big cat Sumatran is categorized in IUCN Red List (IUCN Redlist), or Critically Endangered (CR).?

So what should be done to save the Sumatran Tiger?

Well, what about the people in the city, what should we do to save one of Indonesia's pride? That is simple one of them is saving paper. Why saving paper could save tiger? Because paper is made from trees, more consumption of paper more means more trees are needed. The amount of paper consumption, the more trees should be planted. But it is not good paper is produced from acacia trees. The tree that has to be planted by paper producer is acacia which mean that trees in forest should be cut down to plant acacia trees.

The average annual consumption of paper in the world is 54.7 kilograms per person. For Asia, it is 41 kilograms per person, except Japan. While for one ton of paper powder is produced from 24 trees, 32 million BTU's of energy, 22,219 gallons of liquid waste, and 1.922 pounds of solid waste. So not only we lost forest, but also we waste energy and generate waste (liquid and solid)

Well, so we can save the Sumatran tiger is the easy way, just saving paper. If we do not, we are going to see tiger in history book, in a piece of paper.

Brilliant report. Save paper to save tiger. I see lots of paper being wasted in the offices and our colleges. We need to recycle them. And another indirect(direct) benefit recycling paper - tigers are being saved :D
Thanks for correlating how paper saving habit can help to save tiger.

True! Although digitalization has many critics, I think it actually is a way to help the environment. When things get digital, we tend to use less of mother nature's properties such as trees for papers. By doing so, all other ecological players such as the Sumatran Tigers can have them for a more purposeful benefits unlike ours which serves only for secondary activities. For them, a tree is life.

Wow! saving paper can be an effective tool to save Sumatran Tigers. This is really an insightful report dear Ni. In Nepal also Global Tiger Day was celebrated in a huge scale with lots of campaigns, competitions and awareness. I would like to share my pledge for Global Tigers Day, 2015 that was shared for a slogan competition launched by WWF Nepal " My Roar Might be Terrifying But My Silence Will Deafen You! Save Tigers, Enrich Your Successors".

Wow...I didnt know that by saving paper we can save the tiger as well. That means each one of us has a role to play in protection of wildlife. We humans have already caused numerous species to become extinct. We must take steps to protect the remaining ones.Thank you for sharing this informative report!

Thanks for an interesting report on saving tiger by saving paper. I am shocked to read such heavy paper usage statistics-average 54kg/person/year. That's a lot. We must save paper , reduce it's usage and recycle it as much as possible. Well said , if demand of paper is less, it will lower deforestation rate and improve the survival rate of Tiger and other forest animals.
