It is said that cigarette is harmful to human body both active and passive way. However, many people are not aware of how serious impact of cigarette has on environment as well. The toxic chemicals come out of cigarette litters, which could pollute the environment and harm the ecosystem. They are designed to be long-lasting to be able to threat the environment. Most of the Brazilians smokers live in Porto Alegre city (South of Brazil). It is about 250 thousand people that smoke in that city. The Health Ministry of Brazil estimates that each person smokes around 20 cigarettes per daya. Due to this fact, the company called ?Eco Prática? (Eco-Practice) launched on 23th of July the project of proper cigarette butt disposal. The company shall set up specific bins around the city where people will be able to address the cigarette butts. The cigarette butts will be collected and forwarded to a cement factory. Also, it shall be used to produce energy. Unfortunately, people throw away the cigarette butts in improper places such as streets and parks. Aside from being a toxic material, it is hardly to be collected by the cleaners who everyday pass by the city to collect waste. Moreover, there is a fine for people that dump the cigarette butt in a wrong place. The fine is of about $140, 00. The president of the company said that the public power and government have a strong role to the new idea. They are essential to the success of the project. The goal is to have about 4.000 cigarette butt bin in the city until the end of 2015. Nonetheless, they aim to reach 10.000 in a short period of time. It's great step initiated by Brazil government,,focusing on the hazardous effect of cigarette upon human and environment with incorporating the practices for utilization of waste.Thank you for sharing Luiz,,it is a need to be followed by other cites too.

Hope for the success of the project. Cigarette is never good. in fact immoral habit of smokers to throw cigarette is one of the major reasons of forest fire and many burning incidents.

All of us know the hazards of smoking.As said in the report,it not only affects one's health but the environment too.But this project mentioned in the report is a very innovative one that would not only help in safe disposal of cigarette butts but would aim at producing energy from them too.

I appreciate the move by "Eco Prática" to launch "proper cigarette butt disposal"project.
Disposing cigarette butts in open areas is risky for human health , environment and property also as there are many accidents reported of fire due to burning cigarette butt thrown carelessly in a place with inflammable substances around.
All the best and hope this project is successful. Hope people throw cigaratte butts in specific bins and the city presents a cleaner look with launch of this project.

Cigarette butts should be treated as hazardous waste. Currently, in the generic bin system based on biodegradability, it is not specified as such and are usually thrown under biodegradables (esp. as paper!). Indeed, it contains a lot of harmful chemicals that although may not immediately affect humans, it may cause sudden negative effects to other ecological elements of the system such as smaller avians, mammals and insects.

Each person smoke nearly 20 cigarettes in Porto Alegre city of Brazil, this is really serious to health as well as environment. But this is a good news that specific cigarettes butts will be installed all round the city. I wish for the success and replication of such initiative in other cities too.
