Celebrating World Ranger's Day |

World Ranger's Day falls on July 31st and it is celebrated every year since 2007.However the history of rangers is of long ago and so is their contribution towards conservation .There are more than one million reserves ,parks and protected areas around the world. Nepal with its rich biodiversity harboring 35 forest types (Stainton,1972) and 118 vegetation types(Dobremez,1970) which is home to 185 mammals,862 birds,195 herpes ,77 amphibians ,118 reptiles, 187 fishes,660 butterflies,785 moths and 175 spiders(Nepal Biodiversity Book,2007) . And their protection , management and conservation is the responsibility of ten national parks, three wildlife reserves, one hunting reserve and six conservation areas which are the workplace of the rangers. The role played by the rangers in conservation is major. Often they have to work risking their life from accidents and poachers. These guards of nature deserve respect and everyone's help around the globe wherever they are standing for the environment, biodiversity and for the whole planet. One day celebration is not a big deal but this sort of celebration emphasizes their importances and reminds everyone about the brave nature guards. For the celebration of the ranger's contribution around the globe I organized a Nursery cleanliness program at Forest Research Nursery located at my University in coordination with Union of nature Conservation (UNC).It was done on 2nd August.We gathered there at 3:00 P.m. NST and the work was completed 6:00 P.M. NST. My classmates, juniors and aunty(in charge of nursery) participated in it. The nursery was established mainly for the research purpose in an area of around 125 m. square. It helps students and professors to conduct researches and have the technical knowledge of nursery establishment as well as management. It also supplies quality seedlings. It grows seedlings of many fodder species, ornamental species as well as medicinal plants. It is managed by the University in co-ordination with UNC and one person is assigned for its care. Birthday plantation here gets all those plants from this nursery, I will post about it soon. We divided the work into three parts:- 1) Weeding and cleaning As it is monsoon season unnecessary plants grow more rapidly and can even replace the important species giving them tough competition. So we removed the unnecessary weeds. 2) Transplanting Xanthoxylem armetum (Timur) is a shrub or small tree of height 6 m or above and occurs naturally as an under storey species at altitudes between 1000 and 2100m, It's an important medicinal plant with a good market value. Its fruit, seeds and bark are used for various purposes. We transplanted the seedlings of this plant from the seedling bed to the polypots. 3) Transfering polypots and Picking soil there were many polypots which were damaged due to unnecessary weeds as well as their long time exposure in the nursery beds and there were also some large polypots in the beds without any use. But of course the soils left inside them are useful, so we collected all the damaged polypots from the nursery beds and took out the soil inside them for reuse.Also transferred those large polypots in the shad house for future use. After the completion of the work, I shared them about Tunza-Ecogeneration my inspiration. And they were glad to know about this beautiful platform. Also all of them promised to lend their hand in management of nursery in coming days too. P.S. The three amomg us also planted a Parijat(Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) plant as a symbol of their friendship near the hostel.

The duties of Rangers are tough & you have recognized them aptly.
Nursery cleanliness program is also worth praise.

We salute Ranger's contribution towards conservation.So glad to know the way you commemorated Rangers Day and celebrated / appreciated their contribution by organising your own conservation programme involving cleanliness of the nursery and tree plantation. And you promoted Tunza Eco gen as well . Commendable , Alina. Keep it up.
