Livestock extension is an applied techno-social discipline developed for the improvement of production and health aspects of livestock through educational means. (Sharma, 2008)Livestock extension can aid to achieve food security, corrects the nutritional imbalances, and generates the rural employment opportunities, production are increased through educational training.
Majority of livestock are kept by smallholders, as its feeding cost is less their diet is mostly made up of residues from the farmer?s own crops, and the livestock graze and scavenge on waste land. Moreover, land requirement is less which makes the livestock farming year round income and job.
It is less affected by natural calamities, animal products in form of milk and meat provides food and nutrients even by-products can be source of income or act as fuel and so on. It converts the low quality fiber to high good quality protein, quick source of income and initial investment is also low.
Importantly, through extension technology is transferred lack of awareness about technologies among farmers reason for the less production of livestock products in Nepal. Only few farmers are using the technologies and practices proved on research stations as both productive and sustainable.
Hence, livestock extension acts as bridge between the farmers, analyzing their situation and needs, helps the researchers to do research based on the needs of the farmer and transfer the new approaches to the field.
