Air Pollution in KATHMANDU

by | 08-09-2015 17:53 recommendations 0

My home town is Chitwan. But these days I have been staying in capital city, Kathmandu to prepare for my GRE examination. Well, despite the fact that Kathmandu is capital city of NEPAL, the situation here does not depicts itself being capital city. And the most challenging fact is the pollution of this small city accommodated with large population.

Air pollution is a serious threat of Kathmandu. I realized this with my stay in Kathmandu. It's been just a month that I have stayed here and I am already a victim of eyes problem. I need to make a drive of 10 KM each day to reach my class and this makes me suffer more as the air pollution here is really a serious threat. Similar applies with all other people residing in Kathmandu.

The population of Kathmandu is really high and number of vehicles in Kathmandu is proportional to that population, that means the number of vehicles is too much. Number of public vehicles are more on one hand and number of private vehicles are even more. These two vehicles pollute the air to an undesirable extent and people are getting victims like me each day with several problems of eyes, respiration and others.

As I made a small research in eye hospital, the number of patients with itching and burning eyes are more than patients with other eyes problem. And this itching and burning of eyes problems are solely due to air pollution.

Maximum gases emitted by vehicles is one major causes for air pollution while the lack of cleanliness of road is another plausible cause. The roads of Kathmandu are never cleaned with water and that creates the dust particles blow in the air when a vehicle passes by and the people get victim when such particles adhere to their eyes. Another cause is the muddy road. The mud of road blow freely in air as a vehicle passes by and leaves behind the muddy atmosphere that victimizes everybody passing behind that vehicle.

Well, air pollution proves to be a major issue in Capital city. There are several strategies that can be followed to control this.

Firstly, the government needs to focus to minimize the number of private vehicles. People here drive an individual motorcycle per person. If they had used the public vehile or bus, number of bikes could decline which not only decrease the number of vehicles and pollution but will also decrease the amount of fossil fuel used: petrol. Same applies with exclusive number of private cars too. On the other hand, the road department needs to arrange  cleanliness and water spray in the road at regular interval may be weekly or fortnightly which will minimize the blowing of dust particles in the air. Furthermore, plants like Ashoka, Dhupi, Bonsai Ficus can be planted on either sides of road. The leaves of these plants have high capacity to adhere dust of atmosphere around on their leaves which will minimize the dust pollutants in the air.

I was provoked to feel this as this issue made me too a victim of air pollution. I am soon going to talk with some organizations of Kathmandu representing myself as a Leo member and will collaborate with other Leo Clubs and Lions Clubs of Kathmandu to arrange for plantation program of those above mentioned plants on  either side of road in areas with high dust and air pollution.

KEEP CLEAN STAY GREEN!

Dear Bikal brother yeah our capital city Kathmandu is one of the most polluted city in the world. Especially dusty roads and vehicle traffic are the causes for poor air quality. So sorry to hear about your eye problems but happy that soon you will be working with Leo Clubs over there for plantation :)
