Establishment of Green Zone in Garissa Community Library

It has been a big dream as a young and upcoming environmentalist to promote environmental education for sustainable development. I am proud to say and my last activity as an Environmental Ambassador being the Establishment of Green Zone in Garissa Community Library.

Yathrib Environmental Library that I had established in October 2011, this has opened the minds of the young children back at school. They are now able to borrow environmental books. This has also changed their attitude towards cleaning and greening of their school. They take care of trees within the school with every pupil watering his tree and ensuring cleanliness within the school by properly using provided dustbins.

This idea has opened so many environmental opportunities and also networking with environmental organizations such as The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Department of Communications and Publications.

Mid this year, I got the opportunity to visit the Kenya National Library Service, Garissa Branch and sold the manager and his team the idea of having a green zone; a place within the library fully equipped with different kinds of environmental education materials, from posters, Tunza and Planet Magazines, booklets and kids magazines. The manager has been supportive towards this and making this Green Zone idea a success.

The Green Zone will be an area within the library that is well equipped with Environmental Education materials. The materials will also assist the young people to get enough information on the environment and also tackle different environmental issues within and out of the region. These materials will help the community members whose specialization is on the environment to get information in their researches at all level and in day to day research activities.

By supporting this cause, it will help us to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of Ensuring Environmental Sustainability in equipping the community with environmental knowledge thus fighting environmentally acquired ignorance.
