Clean Cooking Initiative

Being a widespread concern throughout the country, cooking methods are some of the top indoor pollution reasons in the rural and tribal households of India. Firewood and occasionally coal are used to fuel the kitchen flame often in our country and replacing them overnight with an eco friendly solution is quite difficult given the economical difficulties in India. According to a study carried by The Energy Resources Institute of India (TERI), in a community with the carbon footprint of about 600 odd tones, 88% was from domestic cooking.

One of the groups working in this field called Samuha, based at Banagalore, came up with the idea of Chulika, an efficient stove that uses 50% less firewood and causes 80% less indoor pollution. It reduces the cooking time by engaging more efficient thermal transmission methods. This also leads to lesser soot formation which saves subsequent amount of water during washing. The initial cost of around USD 30 a stove was seen as constraint for the rural households, but then an agreement, as part of Clean Development Mechanism, allows the communities to get them for free and an additional 70% of the revenue as well from reduction of emissions.
