Dashain:

Greetings Eco Generations!!!

Happy Bijaya Dashami. May all of your life be blessed by gods and love for each other get strengthen.

It's a merry time in our Nepal. We are celebrating Dashain, biggest festival of Nepal. It's actually 15 days celebrations based on Hindu culture ?Moon Calendar?. The history dates back to as early as beginning of the human civilisation. Dashain is celebrated as a victory of good over evil.

It is the most anticipated festival in Nepal. It's a reunion time for family, homies, friends and relatives. People return back to their home from different places. Delicious foods are prepared aplenty. There is sharing of joy, enjoying playing cards, enjoying traditional bamboo swings and Kite Flyings. Different organisations conduct rejoicing event s loke concert, song competition, kite competition, friendly sport matches and so on. Its time to redecorate home, beautify the garden and buy new clothes and gift it to our beloved one.

On each day, we worship different manifestation of Goddesses Durga. In Nepalese context, 10th Day also called ?Dashami? is the most important day. Its the most auspicious occasion for all Nepalese where we put ?Tika? in our forehead, get their blessing. In fact there is also competition among youngster to put biggest tikas in our forehead. We visit our neighbour also to get blessing and share love.

The most popular event of Dashain is slaughtering of Goats. Unlike other slaughtering tradition where slaughtering is done for sacrificing propose only, Goats are slaughtered mainly for home consumption propose. The possible reason could be closing of butcher house during festive and large number of gathering in a single house. There?s huge gathering of people from grandparents to great grand children. In fact, larger the family generation, richer we are believed to be.

Drinking Bottles and Environmental Me:

Dashain nowadays is popular as festive where houses are full of cold drinks like Coke and Pepsi products, wine, whisky, beer and other alcoholic drinks. Huge chunks of plastic bottles can be seen thrown here and there. Its also become temporarily unmanageable for household to properly arrange these bottles. This results to haphazard throwing.

It is a common practise to use such bottles are water bottles in Nepal. But when they get old, their future is the landfill. And in Dashain we are overloaded with such bottles.

However, extracting some ideas from Tunza Eco Generation Ambassador Report, I have made reused (now unsafe to use as water holder) bottles and extra botlles are alternate to plastic nursery bags. I have already planted few of my best plants there and I am in my next session of making ?Nursey bottle?. I would like to humbly request everyone not to waste such bottles in landfill but rather make their sensible uses.  This habit can be continued even after our festive ends as drinking Coke and Pepsi is now our ceaseless habit.

<<PLEASE SHARE YOUR CREATIVE IDEAS TO US. SO THAT WE CAN IMPLEMENT IT. I GOT THIS IDEA FROM UPCYCLING PROJECT (SAYEN FUNDED) >>

I would like to share few glimpse of them here.

Celebrate Responsibly!!!

and Again Happy bijaya Dashami...

Happy Bijaya Dashami, Rahul. Agree with you -we should reduce the wastage , reuse plastic (especially plastic bottles) as much as possible to avoid them getting into landfill.Happy to know that you cared for environment (as usual) and reused these discarded bottles as pots for planting. I cut & reuse plastic bottles at my home as pen holder , magazine holder (from empty big 2 litre milk bottle) etc. Thanks for sharing .
