Celebrating World Energy day (22nd Oct)-Energy Conserved is Life Preserved. |

22nd Oct is celebrated as World Energy Day . World Energy Day was celebrated for the first time three years ago, after being inaugurated by the World Energy Forum. The UAE led the signing ceremony at the time of the International Declaration for World Energy Day, along with several other heads of states and governments participating in the 2012 World Energy Forum held in Dubai. On July 22 2012, when President and Chairman of World Energy Forum(with other dignitaries) met UAE Prime Minister His Highness Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid in Dubai he announced that the first day of World Energy Forum of that year, which was October 22nd , will be marked as the World Energy Day, every year, following its endorsement. That marked a new beginning in the move for a new energy civilization. Since then, the World Energy Day is celebrated internationally and supported by a large number of United Nations member states. The aim of the World Energy Day is to highlight and demonstrate the importance of society's choices relating to energy production, energy use and the environment, while also aiming to support the policies and solutions that increase energy efficiency across various sectors and countries. On World Energy Day, Masdar (Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company) as a leading supporter of COP 21, highlighted that the accelerated use of sustainable renewable energies which also bring about a big reduction of pollution, remain essential solutions to promote climate change mitigation. It is true that focused mutual efforts of local, regional and global energy stakeholders alike will result in positive outcomes worldwide, for the benefit of generations to come. At individual level , we all should do our bit to not only conserve energy but also to inspire others to do the same and spread awareness about various ways of conserving and saving energy. To celebrate World Energy Day, I as President of our group 'Students for the Earth', organized a social media contest which was centred around the theme "Energy Conserved is Life Preserved". It was about taking your selfie expressing & showing how you conserve energy. For instance ,you could hold LED lamp in your hand and say "I conserve energy by using LED lamps" . I launched the event/contest on 19th Oct by posting contest poster all around our social media pages. I was amazed seeing the overwhelming response . I intended to close the contest and announce results on 22nd Oct (World Energy Day). Within 3 days, I got 97 entries. As soon as I was getting entries , I was sharing them on our FB page to encourage and appreciate participants for their energy saving tip. This also inspired many others to start following these tips to conserve energy. On WED/22nd Oct , I announced the results . I got positive feedbacks from participants and many parents that this was a good way to spread awareness about ways to save energy . This contest also conveyed the significance of World Energy Day.
These days , we can use variety of social media tools to campaign for environmental values. I personally feel that social media campaigns have wider reach and we should use these media to accomplish our mission of involving and inspiring many youngsters to get into action and work towards greener future. |

Energy conservation is of paramount importance & spreading on social media is really impact making. As much we may conserve is better for The Mother Earth.

Dear Arushi sister, I really liked the theme ' Energy Conserved is Life Preserved'. So glad to see young participants with reflecting ways of conserving energy via selfie. Social media nowadays is playing a crucial role in building youth synergy.
