The intersection between sustainability, urbanization and heritage

The recent rapid global urbanization has shifted the irreversible changes of mass production and consumption behaviour in both the rural and urban areas. Due to the existing uncontrollable trend of urbanization, the vital key aspect such as the capability to ensure sustainability of the built environment is literally doubtful.

Human intervention often disturbs the liveability of buildings and heritage infrastructures in the city as well as country sides. By and large, the costs of disruption due to the call of urbanization are non-quantifiable yet at the worst case scenario, it could pose danger human health as well as causing environmental degradation.

In a rough scale, the overview of the intersection between sustainability, urbanization and heritage will only take place when sustainable development is properly implemented and carried out. The concept of Sustainable Development will be the backbone pillars to ensure the co-existence of sustainable urbanization in heritage cities.

Having said so, practically in increasing urbanized cities, the sustainable forms of urbanization are truly depends on the one?s country political, economic and social institutional decisions in promoting the competition or cooperation of different agents with one another.

From the sustainability perspective, heritage cities only co-exist when there are adequate initiatives to promote the practice and development of cultural heritage and diversity in their daily livelihood. The ability and capacity for heritage cities must be carried out with both local and regional resources for the long-term benefit of the community without damaging and/or compromising the existing cultural heritage aligned with the city urbanization blueprint.

Doubtful and provoking questions about the sustainable urbanization in heritage cities:

1) How will the political and economic instability affecting the progressive growth of sustainable urbanization in heritage cities?

2) How sustainable urbanization responses to both of the man-made and natural environmental degradation (such as pollution) issues in the global heritage cities?

3) What are the ideal indicators to assess the successfulness of sustainable urbanization in heritage cities?

Finding and achieving sustainability and retaining the historical importance in heritage cities is the same as finding balance. This concept is mostly controlled be external factors such as political and economical issues. Why political? It is the government who has the main capability to develop infrastructure, create policies and promulgate laws that will either make or break the city's sustainable future.

Heritage cities need to address the challenge of building synergies between economic development and heritage conservation by ensuring and implementing sustainable urbanisation. Government needs to be concerned about conserving heritage. There should be strong legislations to protect cultural heritage. Thanks for the report, Chuck.

I read your report with great interest Chuck.
I believe that Heritage cities must follow sustainable practices by using Solar panels, recycling sewage water, rain water harvesting etc.

Great report, Ambassador. I find most cultural livelihoods as form of sustainable living except few ones which undermine the need for conservation and biodiversity. However, I think that heritage countries can best lead sustainable development if they are well educated to understand the concept. Great report
