Safe Diwali, Please.

A practice carried on for generations and generations cannot be stopped at once. It takes time and other factors to motivate people to give up a practice that they have been doing for a long, long time.
Lighting of crackers has been a tradition in India. Every year on the festival of Diwali, people burst various kinds of crackers, some causing less pollution, others covering up the whole sky with a layer of smoke.

According to a report by a national daily, the sale of crackers has reduced by 40% this year, which is a good sign. It shows that people, although a bit late, are becoming aware of the harmful effects of crackers. These crackers not only make us ill, but are the reason for accidental fires in many places. Every year there are reports of fire in some cracker shop or small hamlets in which some stray spark goes flying.
If we look at it, pollution is just one problem associated with bursting of crackers. The harm is done on a very large scale and this damage cannot be undone.
We need to be more sensitive about these environmental issues.

Environmental conservation is quite a frustrating passion, mostly because however much work and effort you put in it, the results show at an extremely slow rate. This is why we celebrate the little things. A 40% decline in purchase is a great win, perhaps not right now, but if you think in the line of 10-20 years from now, it will have great benefits, and by then purchase of the crackers may be completely obsolete.

So do not lose hope, and celebrate the small wins :)

Yagya I like both of the articles of yours. But I am sorry this article is a bit biased. Don't say it was a tradition in India..please. It gives a wrong image of India.
Diwali was never a festival of Crackers ...it is the festival of light.
I agree today people burn crackers and they burn a lot and hence the pollution increases. But our tradition is of lighting the dias or Lamps.
This ritual has popped in very recently..may be from the past 20-25 years. But I m sure Indians will very soon kick out burning crackers from Diwali.

Rightly said that we need to be more sensitive about these environmental issues like pollution related to Diwali. Glad to note and hear that crackers use has reduced. Hopefully soon it will be totally cracker free Diwali.

I agree as well. Change does not occur over night. Its a process and I can the reduction of crackers - a sign of change.
