Water Pollution and Beyond in Mutha River, Pune, India
Not long ago, together with an international group of nine youths, we partnered with Gomukh (a local Pune based NGO working for conservation of natural resources) to explore the issue of natural heritage and urban biodiversity in the city of Pune, Maharashtra, India.
We went to the Mutha riverside of Pune and we were briefed about the river. Many of us observed the existing environmental problems located along the river including waste and sewage disposal, open air burning, illegal dumping, over-grazing of cattle and etc.
Besides, it was observed that local Pune people (both children and adults) were taking public bath in the river even though the water was potentially polluted with dumping materials and other sources of contaminants.
Furthermore, the uncontrolled spread of invasive weeds along the river mouth is another major threat which can be harmful to the rich biodiversity of species of flora and fauna living within it.
Our main discussions revolved within the Mutha River as we realise that the river has a lot of economic potential yet it has not been discovered in the nearby communities. All of us feel that viable solutions should be done towards utilising the river and the surrounding areas.
What would be your suggestions in order to make the local people to realise that the river belongs to them and they should be the one held responsible to take care of it?

It is sad to see all this waste in an otherwise so beautiful river.
I believe that if an organization or the local authorities decided to clean the river thoroughly then people would appreciate its true beauty and would no longer contaminate it as much. However, I dont know how easy it would be to filter the water of the river in such a great quantity...

Yes, Salil is right, most of the rivers are heavily polluted by religious offerings besides municipal wastes. Indeed, India is very different unlike other country that I have visited. At some point, I would say it is not easy to change the norms of the local people (even though) there are many groups of educated people within the society yet the situation is not improving.

In your observation u must hav found ...most of the pollutants being religious residues.
The main reason being we hav so many festivals & all our religious faith gets fulfilled on d bank of rivers.
See there is a festival today...that people celebrate on the banks of river..its Chat puja.
So, one thing I could suggest is ...request d Admin. to construct a shallow pond like something near d banks.
Therefore, ppl wld get a place to conduct their practices & eventually the river cld be kept clean.

In India d situation is quite different!! The person who has d ground Knowledge will tell u neither can laws nor any awareness can prevent pollution in Indian rivers.
Example-
In The case of Varanasi, where a law said there will be no Ganesha idol immersion in rivers & wat happened? Protest, violence and in the next festival the Admin had to bow!
Btw Indians respect the Ganga river as Mother ..they worship yet it gets polluted. Could there be any other awareness den dat!! Yet ppl pollute !

River polluting must be dealt with heavy hand of law. Mass awareness must be invoked in order to tackle this menace.
Thanks Chuck for an apt report.

Perhaps you can organize a trip through the community and their clinics to find out the rates of skin infection there. Since the people take their baths in the river, chances are skin diseases are very common. You can use this angle to educate them about the need to ensure their river is not polluted.
When people can relate to what you are talking about, they are more willing to join in the conservation fight.
Thank you for sharing this report and all the best :)

First of all dumping of waste must be stopped, Then River cleaning be carried out. Side-by-Side active campaigns be organised to maintain the cleaniness of the river.
Thanks for a good report with vivid pics, Chuck

You could start by cleaning the water, then raising awareness to inform the local people. They could start by example and start cleaning the water and making sure it is in good condition

Awareness level (regarding river as important water sources) is to be increased through school campaigns, hoardings around river, media (both mass media and social media). To start with ,patroling could be deployed to monitor and fine people polluting /damaging river. Fortnightly water of the river should be cleaned. Overall individual mindset , attitude and intentions have to change. Thanks for sharing, Chuck.
