Sharjah to open seven air quality stations

by | 31-12-2015 23:37 recommendations 0

Major institutions working to combat pollution announced that fixed air monitoring stations and a mobile air monitoring unit will be added to the mix, bringing the total of air-testing facilities to 15 locations across the emirate.
New data will paint a clearer picture of suspended particles in the atmosphere collected at source ranging from carbon monoxide, sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides and ozone to meteorlogical readings on wind speed, temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure.
The new air monitoring stations project spearheaded by Bee?ah — an environmental and waste management company set up by Sharjah leaders in 2007 — will use the data to help leading partners in government and academia formulate new strategies to slash emissions from cars, factories and energy-related facilities.
The new Sharjah monitoring stations will be set up in residential, industrial and traffic areas as well as the American University of Sharjah for readings at source.
Despite some studies claiming the UAE has some of the most dramatic air quality levels in the world, the Ministry of Environment and Water said in June that air quality measurements do not exceed world health standards of 2.5pm (particulate matter).
There are already 46 air monitoring stations across the UAE but officials said additional monitoring stations will provide precise statistics on which to build a way forward.
According to the World Health Organisation, ?air pollution is a major environmental risk to health. By reducing air pollution levels, countries can reduce the burden of disease from stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and both chronic and acute respiratory diseases, including asthma?.
The renewed effort to size up air pollution is substantial and will be done by Bee?ah with the help of partners Sharjah Municipality, the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, Hamriyah Free Zone Authority and the Sharjah Airport International Free Zone Authority.
Studying air quality helps in order to protect the health and safety of the society and to take the proper procedures against the sources of pollution.
Air pollution is a vital issue and affects us at multiple levels. It is imperative that we, as responsible citizens and institutions, pool our resources, cooperate and together find remedies to alleviate this major concern.
The first stage of the project involved placing a number of stations in Kalba, Al Hamriya, and the Wasit area and we are certain that the additional group of stations that the Bee?ah company will launch, will form an important addition and will greatly contribute in completing the system of environmental protection of the emirate of Sharjah.
