Gather all plastic to BOTTLE MIRACLES!

Very recently, the volunteers of Volunteer for Bangladesh – Dhaka District took the initiative to construct their own office at Rayer Bazaar. The project was taken entirely by the volunteers themselves, using only plastic bottles, sand and cement. For almost three months, they worked all day to complete this creative project.

After toiling for months, the project finally concluded on the month of April 2012. The VBD head-office was inaugurated on May 1, on the first birthday of Volunteer for Bangladesh.
Though a successful project, the volunteers initially encountered many problems, mainly regarding cost and unavailability of materials. Since the main goal was to construct a low-cost office, it was indeed a shock o find the high price of empty plastic bottles. However, generous donations from Star Kabab, helped to overcome this problem.
Armed with 7000 bottles, 5 kilos of cement, and 10 kilos of dry/construction sand, the volunteers began their project. The bottles were filled with sand, and the structure was created using cement. After the cement walls were completed, the volunteers poured water over the cement so that it would harden.
The volunteers also implemented a technique called the Bottle Bulb - pouring a mixture of water and bleach over the walls to allow light to come through and ensure a cool interior, even on the hottest summer days. Once the structure was finished, the interior walls were decorated with a collage of banners from past VBD events so that the visitors could be immediately exposed to all the past projects or events of VBD.
