I have previously written that the Asian region, East Asia in particular, is one of the most severly contaminated regions in the world. One of the primary reasons is because the rapid economic growth that East Asian nations have experienced after the end of World War 2. Today I would like to introduce a phenomenon that occurs as the result of rapid economic growth as well as the cause for environmental pollution that is to say, this phenomenon operates as the coupling medium between the two factors. It?s name is excessive urbanization.
When the nations were investing on industries and trying to develop the economy, their monetary support and investment were concentrated on certain cities. Well, this kind of point-centered development is indeed a matter of course, but inevitably led to the excess of citizens.
Among the top 10 worldwide cities by population density, 4 East Asian cities are included. This clearly describes the high density in East Asia. However, excessive urbanization could lead to not only social and economic disasters, but also environmental problems.
Environmental pollutions resulting from excessive urbanization is shown in several ways, arising from the urban by-products of transport, industrial activities, and the overcrowding of human habitation. The first impact would be the lack of resources. Everything, water, food, electricity, healthcare, anything would become much more relatively scarce, which will lead to social inflation. In addition, due to the enormous amount of city litter produced and wasted, the green environment near the cities will lose its sanitary state and become contaminated.
Thus governments should work to diversify the concentration of politics, economics, education, and culture currently focused in just a few cities. By a variety of means such as diverting industries, giving taxation benefits, and supplying social infrastructure in an evenly manner, countries should work to discourage migration to mega cities and induce citizens to move to local regions.
